- This thread is phail. No there is no Wifi on the storm. If you want it get a different phone. No, mobile broadband is not as fast as wifi. jeebus. give it up people, the internet is quick enough on the phone and we're not getting wifi on it anytime soon. just live with it.02-06-09 05:36 PMLike 0

So, that reasoning is utter utter utter bull. The ONLY reason Verizon doesn't want you to have WiFi on their BB's is because then people would end their contracts and use free or already existing WiFi connections to, for phone, goto any cheap or free VOIP solution instead of using "their way" and thus not be able to collect from you on a monthly basis for your subscription and subsequent and/or related costs, if any.
Don't be fooled thinking it has got any other reason.02-06-09 05:45 PMLike 0 - Wouldn't the Storm have to support USB host controller functionality? If not (and I don't think it does), it doesn't matter if someone attempts to write a driver.02-06-09 05:51 PMLike 0
- To continue playing Devils Advocate...
Do you have a laptop when you are there? If not, I give up. No, I take that back...You should be learning and not screwing off on your Storm...your parents, student loan underwriters and state tax payers aren't paying for you to play on your phone.
Just a room full of books. Escorts to classrooms where they sh*t up and study. Then be escorted home (cause ya can't leave them dam*ed kids alone for a second of course), put some food in their mouths, put them back in the room with books, shut the door and windows, lock them and don't let them out to go back to class the next day. Weekends? What? No way... you can finish your entire study in 1.5 years. 1 if you hurry. Instead of 4 or 5... This is sort of what happens when your in the army, how is that called in america? When you're 18, you're drafted right? Well... why would study need to be any different. I don't want to pay for any guy slacking of on forums and playing with phones. Come on....

- Oh yes it was. It still even is (was at least last month) on the product info page of RiM on the Storm.....02-06-09 06:03 PMLike 0

To my knowledge Verizon has never made any official statement about liking/disliking wifi. Unofficially, a VZW exec (corporate) opined to me that he actually likes devices with wifi, because people who use wifi frequently tend to use more data and doing so with wifi reduces the load on the data lines.
IMO, once VZW started mandating data plans for all smartphones, they didn't have any good reason for "not wanting you to have wifi" because you have to pay for the plan anyway. If you cancel with VZW because you want to use it as a VOIP phone, you pay the early term fee.
Verizon might not have any BBs with wifi [yet], but they do have (and have had for years) other phones with wifi. My last VZW phone before the Storm had wifi. Would I like to have wifi in the Storm? Sure. Is it a must-have for me? No (otherwise I would not have purchased it).02-06-09 06:06 PMLike 0 - Ok. What about the slot where you plug in the usb cable to connect it to the computer?
With something like this?
Amazon.com: USB Female A To USB Mini Male B 5 Pin Adapter Free Shipping: Electronics ??
(Sorry I know there's probably a really simple reason. Is it just some sort of program that would need to be written?)
Just out of interest
Then an app would have to be written and drivers which would have to be able to interface with the os. Parts of the OS RIM does not open to developers..... I've heard.02-06-09 06:18 PMLike 0 - There is no "ONLY" reason as you claim. It's just your opinion. Like other posters opinions. Like my opinions, as follows:

Blabla.... bottom line is: people are creative. And it will cost VZW money if they allow wifi on their own branded phones.
In business there is ONLY ONE reason for things happening and that is money.
Don't kid yourself.02-06-09 06:28 PMLike 0 -
I do agree with you on one point... VZW and almost all other companies are all about money. Where we disagree is whether allowing wifi hurts their bottom line. You pay the same for data service whether your phone has wifi or not. I haven't done a cost analysis (have you?), but I can definitely see the bandwidth benefits of encouraging heavy data users to use wifi.02-06-09 06:34 PMLike 0 - WIFI update on the storm - As it turns out there is an issue that is being worked on by RIM. The issue seems to be around WIFI and CDMA technology. This is why the BOLD has WIFI (Rogers) and if rogers get's the storm they will probably have WIFI also. From what I hear, RIM is working on this but the problem wasn't space, wasn't verizon demanding the data usage or someone forgetting . Let's hope the hardware is in the phone and that an OS update can finally give us the extra
Come on RIM, us CDMA users have faith you'll fix this for us and keep our fingures crossed that the hardware is there and we can one day benifit

- And don't ignore facts when they don't mesh with your opinions. VZW does allow wifi phones. I see you're on Vodafone, so if you're unfamiliar with VZW's lineup, just go to verizonwireless or phonescoop and filter for wifi.

I'll do their homework for them
Saga...HTC Touch....VX6800....Omnia
All have wifi...evil evil VZW02-07-09 02:17 AMLike 0 - I agree with a few others... and, ultimately, the competitive market is the consumer's friend (assuming Obama doesn't get thwarted in his schemes to turn this nation totally socialist)... if the other companies (competitors) offer it, vzw will eventually have to. Why else can you get a gazillion minutes and free nights and weekends for pennies on the dollar now? remember when the old bag phones got you NO free minutes and it cost a fortune to make a call across town? Now I can zip off free messages to friends in australia.
Just be patient.02-07-09 06:24 AMLike 0 - So it's Obama's fault the Storm doesn't have wifi??? How's that got to do anything with this discussion. He's the president - get over it. Gee, kb5zht - are you my brother in law Chris?02-07-09 10:39 AMLike 0

- Hate to say that this board sometimes has a lot of misinformation. Wouldn't phone arena have it on their site if it was legit? They are pretty good about that stuff. Unless if it came from cx or something on here. I did a google search last night and couldn't find it easily. If it were definite it would prolly be widely known...not saying it won't happen I'm just wondering. I'm not going to sift through a hundred pages on here to find it. Ill just wait and see.

- Question: The Qualcomm Chip used on the Storm is the MSM7600 right? Well this chipset Support for 802.11a/b/g and Voice-over-IP capabilities.
Data:http://www.qctconnect.com/download_l...00_chipset.pdf
Then something is weird...Also support up to 8mp camera. And depends on the configuration; all UMTS frequencies. Looking at the RIM BOM the RF Transeiver used is the RTR6585. If you noticed on the specs, the RTR6585 includes UMTS 1900 + 850 MHz, same as ATT 3G. Maybe this chipset not just support WiFi, but also NA 3G.
What could happends if I manualy add the Bold UMTS file on the Storm CDMA Folder. Same as the Hybrid OS (.99/.90OS) but changing the radio files?Last edited by xattica; 02-08-09 at 12:20 PM.
