I see the longer term benefit of BBM being cross platform. When you are jumping ship to have a phone with more functionality, then the legacy devices, I can understand it completely. With the Z10 and Q10 becoming affordable in the emerging markets, many will go back to BlackBerry.

On the other hand there will be some functions rather exclusive to BlackBerry devices and at least enough people will see and remember BlackBerry in a rather positive light.

90% of the people I meet still just see the outdated OS when speaking about BlackBerry. With BBM implemented nicely and offering some functionality of the actual OS this perception will diminish and those who are tired of Android or Apple are going to take it as a stepping stone to change.

Most of my friends cannot wait to leave Skype behimd and use BBM.

Microsoft has bought Skype and still did not care about implementing it in a highly usable fashion on Android or iOS.

This user base can be quickly won by BBM since it does pretty much the same

WhatsApp, WeChat, Viber and kik are going to be tougher to crack, the loyalty is not that strong there, however.

When BB10 survives for another year, the third place should be secured quite easily.

I bet Microsoft is fuming that they have been left out once again.
