I went to (in my Blackberry) options, media card, selected menu and then format card and it said the format was successful. But it says there is only 3.4 gig? I have an 8 gig card? What did I do wrong? Is the additional 4.6 gigs gone for good?

Try formatting it in your computers SD slot.

It will only register as a 8gb card if you have OS 4.5. If you are
still on OS 4.2 the card is still usable but only up to 4gb.

BlackBerry Device Software Media Card Size Limit
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.0 Up to 2 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.1 Up to 4 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.2 Up to 4 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.3.0 Up to 8 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.5.0 Up to 8 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.5.0.81 and later Up to 16 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.6.0 and later Up to 32 GB

I have an 8 GB card. I'm able to use 7.4 MB of it.
What OS system are you running?

I had the same thing happen. I am running OS4.5 and switched from a 1GB card to 8GB card yesterday. Upon initial installation, status showed I had like 7.4 gb File Free. Once I Restored my backup onto the new card, I'm down to 3GB in File Free.

    How can this be?

Try a battery pull, the OS/media card can be flaky sometimes. Sometimes my media card shows no files when I have a lot of movies/music on it. A reset brings it right back.

Thanks dvdfan. Sometimes the most obvious solution is the one we think of last. I'm back up to 8.7 gb file free after a battery pull.

Which leads me to another question; how can I be at nearly 9GB Free when I only have a 8 GB card?

If you are not on 4.5, get on it. If you are, then you got ripped off.

You got me... maybe another reset is in order! On that note, try downloading QuickPull, it is free and does a reset of your phone without pulling the battery.

Of course you can just do the 3 finger salute thing on the keyboard as well (push alt + caps (the bottom right) and del at the same time).

Thanks guys - it was my old OS that was preventing the full use of my 8gig card. Upgraded the OS and now it is working properly.

    Thanks!

Oh, so I can use a 16GB card on my 8330 Curve since i'm running OS 4.5.0.89? Sweet! My 8GB is down to only ~1GB free due to the 2000+ songs and video clips...sick of moving songs off for a tv show or something...EXCELLENT, Smithers!!
