I think the question to ask is why there is such a large number of iPhone users who don't care to ever check out the competition.

Why are there so many iPhone users who stick with it even though they admit to being "unimpressed" by it (as the data shows).

    Posted via CB10
Because these surveys seem to assume folks have a desire to test each and every option out there, carefully weigh the findings, and choose the best technology for their needs. That is not the case in my experience. Many average people (average in terms of interest in smartphones I mean -- ), want to be loyal to a brand they like and that works well enough for their uses. Once they learn "it", that's as far as they want to go. Just keep replacing one iPhone with another because they know it, it works. And it helps that Apple is on top, and thus the brand seems to be a very safe choice to stay with. Not to mention that every app that exists pretty much exists first and in its most polished form, on iOS. So those folks never get that let down feeling of "not having that new hot app" or whatever. Which could trigger questioning loyalty to the brand.

Almost everyone I work with that has an iPhone bought it as their first smartphone. They've not used other platforms. They don't care to, it seems to me.

As far as being "impressed" with it, I think the wrong assumption is that everyone is so infatuated and wrapped up in smartphones that the phone has to be "impressive" or whatever. Nah for lots of folks it's just a tool.

Z30 is the model we all have at work and I am rather pleased that a colleague has confirmed what I've known forever... BlackBerry has demonstrated it can be as successful as its competition.

This same colleague is a hardcore Apple - iPhone user but for the last week he can not stop talking about how great the z30 is and even thinks this will be the model that will save BlackBerry.

It may even be his next phone.....!!

So if a hardcore apple user can convert it says a lot.
Maybe he is part of the 40% loyal but none blind apple fans who knows quality when he sees it.

It was supported by Apple because it was the first phone to be able to play iTunes music. It wasn't licensed by Apple or marketed as their phone at all. It wasn't called the "Apple ROKR." It was a Motorola phone that ran the Motorola OS and Motorola design. It was previously released as the E398 by Motorola. You can think all you want that it was Apple's phone but you will continue to think incorrectly.
It was Apple's first cautious foray into the arena and they thought Motorola, the big cell phone heavyweight of the time, would be a good choice to get it out there.

The ROKR ended up being so bad that it was pretty clear Apple had to do the whole shebang themselves. I personally think Apple was already heading that way anyway and the ROKR was a halfhearted stop gap at best. Not surprised. I've always liked Moto's dumb phone hardware but good Lord their software was terrible.

I'll use an iPhone for as long as it (and more importantly it's ecosystem) continue to meet my needs. I'm sure the Z30 and the Note15 (or whatever) are perfectly good devices but their ecosystems pale in comparison to what I'm accustomed to.

It's true and not true. I used to buy apple products blindly,
    - every ipad up to Gen 3
    - a lot of ipods and ipods Nanos
    - 2 apple tvs
    -MBP
    - iMac
    - every iphone from 3gs to the 5.

Apple does make good quality products, that just work if you don't know mush about technology. But now that I actually own and have experienced other os's, I wouldn't buy an apple products so blindly, not to say I wouldn't buy them at all though. I got an android tv last week that blows the apple tv away even jail broken.

What do you prefer over an iPad? Playbook? Just kidding... But seriously, the new nexus 7 is passable because of the price but android tablet apps are just ugly so really only tablet worth spending money on is an iPad. I have a mini retina and just love it.

Seems to dispute the notion that "most people who buy iPhones don't buy them just because they have an 'Apple' logo on them, but because they are the best."

Note: To be clear, I'm not saying they aren't good products.

This highlights the struggle BlackBerry is going to have with their brand being so tarnished

Apple Loyalty Study: iPhone owners blindly loyal to Apple | BGR

A study that will make blindly loyal Android fanboys giddy with glee has found that a huge chunk of iPhone owners admit to being blindly loyal to Apple, willing to buy just about anything the Cupertino, California-based consumer technology giant slaps an Apple logo on.

The study was conducted bySIMOnlyContracts.co.uk, and it involved polling 2,000 iPhone owners.

About 60% of those polled admitted to having a ?blind loyalty? to Apple and even more ?78% ? said they ?couldn?t imagine having a different type of phone? than an iPhone. Interestingly, however, just half of respondents said they were ?really impressed? by Apple?s iPhone.

In other words, they?re happy using a smartphone they?re not really impressed by simply because Apple made it.

The survey found that 54% of iPhone owners have owned another iPhone model prior to their current phone, and 37% said the reason for upgrading to a newer iPhone model was familiarity with the iOS user interface. 28% said the newer iPhone model was just the best smartphone for them, and 25% said they stayed with Apple because of iOS-specific features like iMessage and FaceTime.

?It?s really interesting to discover this blind loyalty amongst iPhone users ? they?ll no longer consider other mobile phones on the market, purely because they trust Apple and perhaps like being associated with the brand,? SIMOnlyContracts.co.ukfounderRoshan Bholah told The Telegraph.?However, the old saying ?if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it? could ring true here, as it?s clearly a case of them having a positive experience with the handset. It?s ultimately the loyalty all brands hope to achieve with their customers ? old and new.?

He continued, ?Product lifecycles are fickle, so it?ll be interesting to see how long Apple can maintain this relationship with its customers, not forgetting to mention how long they can keep their competitors at bay.?

Of those who had switched to an iPhone from other smartphone brands, 17% came from a BlackBerry, 14% from a Nokia phone, 9% from a Samsung handset, 4% from HTC and only 2% from a Sony phone.

    Surprise surprise:
99% of NRA-members are loyal to Smith&Wesson (and alike) and are blind to dead kids murdered by unlimited spreaded weapons.
99% of cattlemen are loyal to steaks and are blind to the possibilty to become vegetarian.
99% of catholics are loyal to the pope and Fuehrers order and blind for rights of self-determination
99% of homosexuals have no fear to kiss the own gender and are blind for the sexual attraction of the contrary gender (and convers for heteros- except bisexual- 99% of them didnt understand the problem!)
99% of germans are not amused by the activities of the NSA but are blind for their own brainlessness in context of facebook, twitter, PayBack, Online-Banking....
99% of all smokers supports criminal law agains drug-abuse and are blind for own lung cancer.
99% of smokers who believe, that the plausibility for lung cancer is very low (1:100.000) but to win in a lottery very high (1: 490.100.000.000). Therfore it makes sense to continue with smoking and to buy a lottery ticket.
99% of chinese speaks chinese and are blind for hebrew.
99% of runtish italiens with a Lamborghini are loyal to viagra
99% of inuit are loyal to their Huskies, their canoe and snowmobiles and are blind for Hawaiin shirts (also in combination with a frozen cocktail)
99% of apple-users wish to have a Lamborghini, beeing taller, are loyal to cocktails (a looot of cocktails), would use firearms to defend their ignorance and try to become hetero again (except the drunk cleric)....and love their shaved Huskies too....

99% of this due is nonsense and in no aspect surprising... 99% of you should ignore this....except those with humor...

Seriously, 2000 people surveyed is not a sufficient representative sample of all the Apple users. And generalization is so idiotic! People are free to like and buy whatever they want for whatever reasons, after all it's their money.
On a personal note, I hope that BlackBerry will continue to work hard at trying to win back some of its "lost customers".

Dude, if you've paid attention you'd have seen this with:
    iPhone
    iPhone 3GS
    iPhone 4
    iPhone 4S
    MacBook Air
    PowerBook Titanium
and just about every other BlackBerry, Whooops - typo based on habit (lol, being cheeky on purpose here) - Apple product introduced by Steve Jobs.

I'm an Apple fan ... I use OS X products and I do switch back and forth between iOS and BB10 but for long stints at a time (normally when iOS gets updated), and for personal and professional reasons (I work in I.T. with mobile device support). But I make my decision based on my usage or investigation reasons/patterns I'm not affected by those around me in my cliq or financial status level or economic class. To me it seems this is the basis of Apple iOS users ... take a look at the post your desktop setup/laptop setup threads on macrumors.com site and you'll see ... it's mostly the upper middle-class income range that tends to enjoy Apple products. Plus for OSX they just prefer simplicity - has nothing to do with lack of tech knowledge, quite the opposite. I'd say 50% is based on their work environment being based on OSX so iOS is a natural choice - nothing blind about it.

Blackberry isn't exactly a fad or something you can use to show off or look wealthy, especially not today. It's a pretty small section of the market and I'm pretty sure most people buy them because they have a specific need that the BB does far better. I got one last year because of the qwerty and no other phones offer that, this year I have an Android because I think Blackberry's current status is a failure unfortunately. Maybe a few people are buying the phones out of fanboyism but if I'm honest I think most people who buy a BB10 do because they genuinely prefer the OS to other phones. It does have some very unique and useful features. Considering there's even users jumping ship to iPhone and android I doubt there's many people here who would enjoy those phones more but "put up" with a blackberry just because of the brand.
a bunch of people on this forum have admitted they only want a bb10 to 'be different' and so they dont look like a sheep by buying a popular phone, people i know in real life only have a blackberry because its cheap or because they upgraded on launch day thinking itd be similar to their bbos phone (they arent massively into tech, suggest researching a phone to them and theyd look at you like youd suggested researching for a new toaster) i dont think the majority purchased it for a specific need, they either wanted a cheap phone, wanted to be the odd one out as though their phone choice completely defines them or upgraded from bbos out of blind fan boyism

I think at this stage of the game suggesting BB users don't know anything about the competitive landscape or features of iOS or Android is a big stretch. (I considered omitting the use of punctuation but could not do it.) In fact I would argue the opposite, the majority of Android and iOS have never used a BlackBerry and don't appreciate the recent advances made.

I don't agree with that, unless we're talking about younger smartphone users or adults who have just gotten into the smartphone game within the last couple years. Between around 2007-2010 BlackBerry was THE smartphone to get. It was a status symbol. People equated BlackBerry with important high-rollers. What happened in 2010, you ask? That year a triple threat was released: the iPhone 4, the Samsung Galaxy S series, and the HTC Evo. Now, HTC is the perfect example of how fickle the consumer smartphone market is. They released some FANTASTIC devices but just couldn't keep the market's attention after a couple years. The HTC One which was released last year received high praise, but it wasn't enough to drive sales (sound familiar?).

This fickle market could actually play into BlackBerry's favor someday, providing improvements continue to materialize.

People stick with iPhone because it works for them. Blind loyalty is a terms that can be placed on fans of any phone maker. Just look at some of the comments on this forum. If the product no longer meets or exceeds their expectations they will use a phone from a competing brand.
No need to name call or insult fans of other brands because they like something that you don't.

Went to upgrade phones earlier. The Z30 crashed immediately when my friend tried to use it, so he basically turned around and for the Droid Maxx which is basically the Android equivalent to the Z30 (in specs and marketing). He also had no idea how to navigate the phone and didn't seem interested in learning when I tried to show him. Tries showing Hub but he didn't care about that.

I also don't think the phone was fully updated. Some other phones in there had updates available. They sold a ton of iPhones, too. I think maybe 50% or more of the people ahead of us got one.

I think people here are fixated on details the average person doesn't care about. They just want something that works well for them and first impressions matter a ton. After that phone crashed, all interest was lost and there was no way I could change his mind. He basically told the rep to give him the other phone within a minute.

I got the iPhone cause I'm tired of huge phones and the camera and app quality are amazing on that platform. Also wanted to get rid of my Google Login, without having to create another one. iMessage and other iCloud services were huge selling points, since basically my entire social circle uses iOS.

You just about summed up the reasons why I use an iPhone. The device is well built, the support (from Apple) is second to none, 3rd party software (quality) is top notch, not to mention the device just works.

BlackBerry was THE smart phone to get because it was effective, possibly even essential. The status symbol status was just a surrogate marker. I can't speak to Android but iPhones and iPads still lack the effectiveness and efficiencies BBOS had back then. Now BB10 has surpassed BBOS. You make a good point but Android and iOS did not improve on the communication aspect of the mobile phone. They added more consumption tools (apps) which appealed to a broader spectrum of the market. The market segment attracted to flash and whizz-bang is fickle, their interest is rarely linked to a phone's functionality.

Agree in terms of many devs putting their best effort into this platform over others and in the selection. With the volume, comes crashing apps, which I get a lot. Nothing Apple can do about that really. Not all developers are equal.

not to mention the device just works.
Don't agree. And I say this as a Mac head from Classic Mac OS 9. For me, they used to "just work". Now, since Jobs has died, I've had a lot more issues than I ever used to have. I hear how they're "always fluid" and "always work" and that has not been my reality for the last two years.
