maybe, i am still thinking they are short of those numbers though
edit: from a real quick calc looking at the last 6 quarters i estimate 8.5-9 million units sold
Don't have any numbers in front of me and too buys watching the the finals to search, but I think it's less than 5 mil.
I think the 10 million mark has been passed by now, but I have no straight up statistics to ground my argument. But, thinking back of the earnings reports, I do believe the total has exceeded 10 million. How crazy, I remember TH saying he expected to sell 10 million Q10's alone. This, of course, was before the Q10 came out and before he got fired and received 50 million bucks anyway.
How different is this compared with Apple. I read last week that they have ordered more than 60 million iPhone 6 devices from their manufacturers. I can't wait for BlackBerry to come out with a statement like this someday. Hell, even half that number would be great. Check even half that number would be great and half that number even would be great.
Ah well, just keep buying BlackBerry 10 to contribute. Can't really do more than that.
Based on the ERs up to the last one, a more accurate number would be around 8M. That's not counting the current quarter, of course.
Well, it's getting there. Slowly.
8,451,132 just counted
Q10 with Telus on 10.3.0.296
Yeah, that sounds about right. The good news is that if they're getting decent volume with the Z3 that number might be more like 11-12 mil by the end of the year.

Does that account for the shipped/sell through distinction and the double counting Blackberry did from transitioning to a different counting practice? How many devices were reportedly "shipped"/"sold" using each counting practice?
(A lot of Blackberry's early "shipped" devices were unsold to the consumer but reported in the earnings report and the devices would be reported again for being "sold" to the consumer a later quarter after Blackberry changed counting practices.)
we are going to assume that most all bb10 devices are "sold" to end customers since that is how BB is reporting them now. There might be 500K in stock lying around in stores though to make the numbers go higher. That was the way I did my calculation atleast
So far I'm not sure they are getting decent volume... 25K - 30K during a two week period for a launch in India isn't really decent is it? Was the Indonesian launch based on the same numbers before they sold out?
They did seem to be selling more devices based on the last ER (or was that due to another counting change), which is GREAT based on the age of the lineup and lack of marketing. Maybe a result of BES10/12 promotions... that should continue to drive sales if that is the case.
Personally I don't see the Z3 or the Passport increasing sales all that much. But as long as the Z10 remains available and cheap and as long as there is growth in BES adoption they should at least keep on pace to match last years sales. And the Classic should help to pickup the slack.
But 10 million is sale during a single year.... as easy as it should be to accomplish, I don't see that happening at this point. Maybe if the US Gov gives up on their wanting other devices and goes ahead and replaces all their BBOS devices along with any iPhones and Androids they have....
BB sold well over 10M phones in 2013, but that's only if you could BBOS and BB10 together. 10M BB10 phones, at the rate they've been selling, isn't going to happen - BB is going to need to do some hefty marketing or land a number of large enterprise orders in order to move that many.
That seems to be mostly cleaned up by now or will fully be by the next quarter. I imagine they are probably going to hit the 10 million mark by the end of the next quarter.
I would love to be able to get more data on this (along with models that sell etc), but doubt we will ever haha. My theory for a long time has been that the real inventory glut was due in big part to BlackBerry filling the U.S. carriers full of inventory in expectation of sales (both from them and also the carriers) that never came in that market. Suddenly there was a stuffed channel in a huge market that was extra resistant.(A lot of Blackberry's early "shipped" devices were unsold to the consumer but reported in the earnings report and the devices would be reported again for being "sold" to the consumer a later quarter after Blackberry changed counting practices.)
It was after the U.S. roll-out that the inventory issue was raised and then the company put the for sale sign on.
No doubt other markets had issues, but I bet the stuffing of the U.S. channel was the big catalyst.
BB10 was launched in January 2013.
I think, it's now fair to assume, based on press releases, that 10 million BB10 smartphones (10 models) have been (really) sold (to end-users) worldwide during the past 10 quarters.
Hope, the 100m mark is reached in the next 10 quarters.
Yes we have long passed the 10 million mark from when this thread was started....
But sales are falling and at this point I bet we are losing more than 800K - 900K BB10 users each quarter as we are now past the 2 year upgrade cycle for many. Never mind the MILLIONS of BBOS users we are losing each quarter..
At the current rate, even an additional 10 million phones during the next 10 quarters will be a struggle - less than a million BB10 phones are now sold each quarter, sales are continuing to fall year-over-year, and BBOS users are predominantly choosing to migrate to other platforms. It's a really ugly situation, and something big will have to change before we can even hope to see better results.
From all the Q5s and 10s I've seen in cash convertor windows I bet half of the 10m have swapped them for apple or android so probably only 5M in use? Sad really it's such an good OS.
Swiped on my beautiful Passport!
Never mind the ones that are being stored in the vaults (or sock drawers) of BlackBerry Collectors that have one of each color of each model.
Too be honest, only BlackBerry knows how many unique BBID there are and how many active devices are communicating with the NOC on a daily basis. I'm sure Chen has watched that number fall all during his time there.
Those days are long gone.

Yeah.... Apple is now asking suppliers to manufacture between 85 million and 90 million units by the end of the year for their new iPhones.
Where I doubt BlackBerry will commit to even 500K in one production run - really have to wonder what that does to their cost per device.
those days were never here, bb never had numbers close to that.
Well, it IS an "s" year with only incremental updates so they probably were conservative in their order. I'm just wondering what it's like to sell a million iPhones per day. That's 3 months of sales for BlackBerry.
Which is why I'm not sure sales of the "s" phones will be nearly as strong as when they went big and almost everyone I knew upgraded. In fact I know of several people waiting till this fall to upgrade their phones (Androids).... to the newly discounted iPhone6.
I really think that Apple owns the upper end of the market now...
