I don't understand how an online preorder can be sold out.
Can't they just get all the orders and then manufacture devices based on the numbers. Or ship some devices on a later date.
I mean, it's not a brick and mortar store with a limited stock.

Simple: the pre-orders were a PROMOTIONAL (lower-than-normal) price, for the first X-number of people who ordered. It's essentially a "first 1000 buyers get $50 off" pre-order sale. There were a limited number (around 1000) of "special edition" phones marked "Jakarta" on the back for this pre-order, spread around the launch partners, and they've sold out.

This is a simple, common marketing trick to build hype and get news coverage. Tons of companies do promotions like this for new products, especially those who don't otherwise have huge marketing budgets, because it's relatively cheap to do. This just tells me that someone at BB is making smart decisions given the budget limitations they have to operate under, and is building some hype in an inexpensive way.

Prudence and efficiency. BlackBerry is learning from their past mistakes.

Now I cant imagine pre sales being greater than 100,000 total units as of today. But if they can market the Z3 well, keep the pre orders going by releasing more allocation to the resellers and get that number up to a million units pre sale that would be tremendous.

I agree with your statement. I'd be sincerely happy to see the Z3 sell well, but I'm highly suspicious of the term "Sold out" when devices have yet to be made. Keep taking orders and crank up the assembly line. It's far too early for the "Mission accomplished" banner.

As big as the population is there, I would hope they made enough pre-orders available. I believe none of this selling out mess until actual numbers are revealed to us at which point I hope they are better than expected. I believe/hope Chen will be more upfront about the device sales and not try to sugar coat it just because it "sold out" cause as we saw with the Z10, that doesn't mean anything

BB10 sales stood at 6 million globally at the time of the last ER, IIRC.
