"Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has bought a very small slice of TCL, the company that produces Alcatel’s and Blackberry’s smartphones and manufactures a large amount of TVs. According to Hong Kong newspaper The Standard, this small share (a 0.48 percent interest) bought for 167 million Chinese yuan (roughly $24.4 million) is part of a new strategic agreement that will enable the companies to help each other develop smart devices and appliances.

We can expect the two companies to start sharing resources...

It’s unknown which specific areas TCL is looking to boost with the Xiaomi partnership, but it’s possible we could start to see more Xiaomi-based technology in Blackberry and Alcatel phones going forward."

What is Xiaomi based technology? Not sure what components they might manufacture... Storage, Memory, Battery? Displays TCL does, Chipsets (really most of the insides) have to be Qualcomm for BlackBerry Secure.

Another article on this made it sound more like Xiaomi was making the investment in order to have
    better access to displays.

Did give insight that TCL is a big manufacture for Amazon and Google smart products... Not sure if it's under TCL Communications or on of the other faces of TCL.

Great questions. The article is pretty speculative.

24 million dollar for 65 million shares? 30 cents ish per share? less than 0.5% ownership normally set your foot into the door for MFG capacity sharing or preview of product, but not access technology, unless it got hidden exchange IP clause (not sure what xiaomi can provide as early post indicate... ). IMHO.

"To put in layman’s terms, the joint effort focuses on chips and will make it easier for TCL devices to incorporate into Xiaomi’s operating system, where an expanding universe of third-party gadgets reside. The partners may also make co-investments in the hardware field....... The tie-up provides “tremendous help” for Xiaomi as it ups the ante in home appliances, wrote Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun"

We will soon see how bad 2018 was for TCL Communications.... but it clear that phones aren't something that the parent TCL Corp is focused on anymore (only 2019 products at this point are the 1X & 1C... ). And while Xiaomi is still very successful in smartphones, I think it's clear that having other products is necessary for the future. Clearly anything "smart" was a hot item this year... Doorbells, Cameras, Thermostats, Speakers/Sound Bars, Security, Wearable.... even toothbrushes.

I get what you're saying... but Xiaomi is already HUGE in those things. Just not in North America. They're already massive in other things. - https://www.mi.com/global/list/ you can practically furnish your whole home with what they offer. TV's, projectors, computers, fans, lightbulbs, alarm clocks, robot vaccums, and more. You can buy Xiaomi shoes! - https://xiaomi-mi.us/shoes/.

It's TCL who is looking to further expand those things... at their press conference they noted they wanted to deepen their move from what they already have in tv's, hence their jump to headphones, plus you'll see more of their appliances become available such as air conditioners etc. - https://www.tclusa.com/products <-- I expect the Xiaomi tie up is to help both brands expand. TCL can get more products, while Xiaomi gets some additional help in North American market.

Mii box is pretty cool - I can see integrated in to TCL TV. (Can't get it in Canada, only US walmart got it - and usually short of supply).
