I am thinking about buying a blackberry from newegg, without a contract. Will this work on a AT&t plan? I don't need a data plan because I will have wireless in almost every place that I go. For text messaging I was just going to use google voice.

Sure sounds good go for it
That's the beauty of GSM - pop in a SIM card and you're good to go.
Once the ATT network picks up your blackberry, they will send a notice to you and you'll have to get a data plan. If you don't, they'll add it automatically.
You can no longer add BB devices to the network without a data plan.

besides half the device is crippled without a data plan
You need a data plan to use google voice on your blackberry anyway so your plan is shot and its right when they say you can't get it without a data plan. When you buy a blackberry you HAVE to get a data plan but you can remove it from your account at anytime

Sorry, but this is false. (Used to be true, but no more.)
As of September of last year, you must get...and KEEP...a data plan if you upgrade to or add a BB smartphone to your AT&T account. You can no longer remove the data plan. (If you had a BB prior to the specific date last Sept, you are not required to get the data plan until and unless you upgrade your contract/device.)
As I said, if you DO try to use one without getting a data plan, AT&T will "conveniently" add it for you.
I know this for a fact. i gave my son my 9000 about 3 weeks ago and after he used it about a week, he got a text from AT&T stating that they had detected he was using a Blackberry and would now be charged the applicable data plan charges.
