Just got this response from the friendly tech at Verizon. Apparently they aren't aware the issue has been resolved if in fact it had been resolved.

?I sure appreciate you getting in touch with me.*The wifi issue*does appear to be on*VerizonWireless' end. Was just discussing it with 2 of my colleagues. It may very well be locked. Being a 'tech guy' I never been very fond of locked devices. I'll continue to research and see what I can find. RIM may not have much to say on this matter but we will see. Again thank you for your feedback.?

That's usually how it is. I work for VZW, and we get told absolutly nothing. I didn't even know about this issue until I read about it on here. Big Red can be annoying to work for sometimes.

Ok.. Here we have two brand new Storm2s (my wife and myself, her first, mine upgraded from Storm 1).. We BOTH get white Wifi icon and good connections at the local Panera Bread on their public hotspot.... At home and at the barn, there are wifi units running wep, and neither will connect to these.. I know the house is a Linksys WAP54, not sure whats running at the barn.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Does anyone know how the blackberry actually works when connected to wifi versus connected to the mobile network and how BIS works? I have never seen anything very technical or detailed about the inner workings of BIS, but I have worked on BES. I miss the resources and support I used to get from RIM while working in a BES environment.

This is my guess, although I don't currently have the resources to research and verify it. For some services such as BBM, PIN messages, and BIS email to work properly I beleive that the device has to be able to communicate with RIM's servers. I am not sure what ports/protocol it uses, but I'll bet if you're on a network with no firewall everything works just fine. It's when you get on a network that doesn't allow these connections that you'll see this issue. I'm not sure. I'd really love to know how it functions. I'd love to know the root cause and how the whole thing works. If anyone has the knowledge, resources, or documentation to verify this I'd love to get a PM from you.

The way we found out the Tour release date: Emulator went up on 7/11, got a list of known issues from a supervisor on the 12th. Yeah. This is normal.

Ok.. I decided to spend my saturday evening trying to get some resolution for us that desperately want the wifi that we paid for in the phone to actually work!
    Heres the scoop.
VZW tech support, zero help (as usual), local tech guy in store, more helpful.. Tested one of our two phones there, on the only wifi they had, an activated Myfi unit.. Connected perfect first time... Whats the difference.... WAP-PSK on the Myfi vs. WEP..

Took both of our phones to Panera Bread.. Able to get a connection on both to their open wifi hotspot (after some location hopping to get a signal... they have a problem with their router at the moment and its on about 10% power output).

Brought both units home again, updated the linksys router here to the latest firmware (with WAP security as well as WEP).
Changed router to WAP-PSK, phones connected right up, within 90secs white icon and connecting thru wifi (turned off 3g and still had browser to verify).
Changed router back to WEP, changed phones config, no connection. Same thing, get an IP but no pings.
Put it back on WAP-PSK, phones connected right back up and running again.

Sooo.. It appears (with at least two separate Storm2 units) that it is actually in the security protocols where the problem resides.

Can anyone else attempt to verify this on their routers? Change over to WAP-PSK and see if they get connected.

We have NOT done any of the VZW tricks of jumping to BES and back or reloading service books..

Here we go. 2 hours on the phone with Verizon and this is what I got.

Couple tech guys spent some time with me and after no progress, they called RIM. This is what they got.

    1. Verizon customers will not get email with standalone wifi, but rest assured, that you are getting the push when you have the Verizon Network and Wifi both on.
    2. Yes, you can browse the internet with standalone Wifi.(Knew this one already)
    3. They are aware of the issue with the logo not lighting up. Apparently, they've received several phone calls about this issue. They believe it has something to do with the software, and that they are looking to fix this in the next software update. (For those of you who only install officials, it could be awhile. For those of us who use leaks, I can't see it being very long.)
    4. They also mentioned something about a browser update, but I'm not aware as to what that means because it has nothing to do with my problem...but, cool.

Hope that helps those of you out there out. I also asked if it would be worth it in taking it back to the store, and they told me "Probably not. Looks like a wide enough problem that you'll end up with the same thing."
    1. Issue 3 above is my exact problem on the phone with Verizon right now for 45 min, he is trying to reach out to BB directly...
    2. VZW Rep got through BB after 55 min
    3. After 60 min I was given a BB case number and xfered to a BB rep
    4. After 70 minutes I was give a new case number and this number 1-877-255-2377 (direct number to BB Support)
    5. Xfered to Level 2 support after verification of my BBS2 OS (V5.0.0.320), PC OS, and Desktop manager as well as e-mail version...dunno why but WTF
    6. After 76 finally xfered to level 2 support (a guy named "calvin") but I think it is off-shore help
    7. Asked to enter my BBS2 MAC address to my wirelessrouter - did that and it did not work - To get MAC address go to OPTIONS - STATUS - MAC address will be shown about 8 lines down
    8. No success 90 minutes and all I have is a case number. BB did not know s*hit

I figured out the problem, if you are on a home WIFI network, you have to configure your WIFI setting to , you cannot use a WEP setiing as this is only for laptops. By setting up using the WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] option you will be able to set up laptops and devices on WIFI, hope this helps

So after playing with the S2 for a little over 24 hours, the only issue I have is the WiFi. I have searched through the problems thread, and this one as well, and haven't seen anything quite like I am experiencing. With my 3G connection off and WiFi on (white logo), I am able to browse the net and get email, but I can't use BB App World, Pandora, or UberTwitter. I can, for some odd reason, use Facebook though. The even more frustrating thing is that if I have 3G and WiFi (again white) connected at the same time, I also can't get to any of these apps. I receive a "DNS Error" in BBAW, "Network Error" in UberTwitter, and 'Could not connect to Pandora. Please ensure you have sufficient network coverage and try again." in Pandora.

I am using a Apple Time Capsule with WPA/WPA2 Personal Key through Mediacom if that makes anything more clear. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I use WEP on my WiFi, and I have no problems at all connecting to my WiFi... I think you guys may just ahve something not setup right. Or maybe you dont wait long enough... With me, when I turn the WiFi on in my S2, it takes about 2-5 minutes to show the white "WiFi" logo on the phone. It shows the grey one right away, but it takes time to connect and work. I have MAC filtering enabled on my router as well. All I did was enter the MAC address in the router, plug in the WEP key, and away i went. It worked perfect..

I have a Bold right now....S2 on the way WiFi only works for some apps and browsing. Push email and BBM do not work. If yours does work, then it's becasue you haven't turned off your data connection. Turn that off and see if you still can BBM or email through native BB email
i turned off my data connection. I only have wifi on. I am able to send and recieve email with my blackberry email.

has anyone else's wifi taken forever to connect? and has anyone had to connect to the wifi (and been fullly connected i.e. full white symbol) before making a phone call to use data alongside phone? I've tried activating wifi while on a call and it's an epic fail and i just wanna be sure that u have to connect to wifi first and i'm not crazy.

i'm getting an even more annoying issue. I have no green check mark on the right of manage connections, but when i do a ping from the S2, i can ping my router, when I do an NSlookup i can get a resolve from yahoo.com, but when i shut off my radio, and try to use wifi, its still grayed out and it says i have no connection. My router is using wep and it says connected. When i go to status on the BB, i can an IP address of 192.168.1.4 but i can't ping 1.4 from other laptops that are connected wirelessly through the same router. Also, there is no green check like the "verizon wireless network", just a dash. I'm really having a hard time with this and i'm a NETWORK SPECIALIST.

Ahh, yes it does. My bold worked rather well. The WiFI service book provided a port into the BIS servers.

i just typed this whole thing and then lost it. damnit, now i'm going to give you a short version. I tried WEP and WPA encryption on the router. The storm2 and curve 2 both would say connected, and display the SSID under manage connections, but there was no green check on the right like how verizon wireless network shows. I then decided to take off encryption on the router. The second i did that, and did a search again on the curve 2, wifi lit up and connected right away, and i received a green check on the right of manage connections. Then i put back WEP and also tried WPA, and it connected, but no green check and could not get to a web page. are we saying now, in my example that the BB storm and curve 2 cannot support encryption? Are you guys that say its working, do you have no encryption on your router? wifi is not that important to me, its not important enough to have no encryption on my router but it makes no sense that it would work right away as soon as shut off the router wireless encryption, and then the wifi signal went away after i turned encryption back on. and yes before someone asks, of course i deleted the profile and did anotehr search once i put encryption back on and put in the wep key and wpa key also. I can even do a ping and dns lookup to yahoo and to my other internal IP addresses, but a browser page wont load. then when i delete the profile and search again after i put encryption to NONE, wifi pops right back up again....whats goin on? do any of you have it working WITH encryption? maybe we can figure out a pattern here and triangulate the issue.
