I have a Curve 8520. Is there a way to send email and BBM without a SIM card?

Yea, as long as you have the phone registered on a BlackBerry Data Plan, and the wifi indicator is bright white.

I'm guessing you have GSM carrier? I can do everything without a sim but I'm on CDMA. You need a data plan either way.

You need an active BlackBerry Data Plan in order to use BBM.

I believe the way the authentication works is via a service book pushed to your phone from the provider. It essentially says whether the device is premitted to use BIS or not.

Just curious if anyone has been able to get a service book provisioned for BIS on a BB with no sim card

Yes you can, as long as the SIM card you removed had an active Blackberry Data plan on it and you download service books beforehand, which don't get erased when you remove the SIM card, however if you put in a different SIM card then service books WILL get erased and you won't be able to access BIS services over WiFi anymore.
