Wifi connection should be stronger since the distance to the router is shorter than the 3G connection is to the phone company's tower

It is not just the distance to the tower as the rnc is nowhere near the internet. Phone > router >isp> internet vs phone > nodeb > rnc > sgsn > ggsn > sig > routers > internet

After that you have to consider a private connection vs a shared connection and the the bandwidth of each pipe.
