Anyone know???!!
i havent done it but from what i have read yes. Think there is even a how to post. But you may accrue a charge.
I am with Rogers so tether is free. Can you direct me to a post?
ok well using the search function i got this link for you. should try it.

Well if you were to look at that thread you would see it has not Wifi reference. And i have already looked at that thread. I am no dummy. This is why i am asking the question.
No need to get all defensive, no one was saying you were a dummy.
Take a look

Tethering with Wi-Fi is more problematic than tethering over Bluetooth; there may be a custom app that needs to be either developed or found that does this.
If you tether through WIFI, wouldn't you be using the speed of the WIFI rather than 3G? I always thought 3G was only when you were using the data from the phone and not WIFI?
Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.
I tried tethering the and it uses a dialup address, username, and password. So if somehow you can change the dialup address to point to the WIFI, i guess it could work?
If you look at another phone like a Palm or iphone, they can tether through wifi using PDAnet. The reason i want to tether with wifi is that it is simple to set up. All that is needed is the ad hoc connection between the phone and computer. And it also means that i do not need to make sure the computer i want to connect with has BT or the modem script. Pretty much every computer has Wifi. Where BT is much less common
Man, I don't miss having a BB at all. Droid Does! :) Sorry it's so hard to work with your phones. It's worth the investment to switch.
And why are you still posting in the blackberry bold forums and not some droid forum?
@ Hexeir - It does not work on all devices. My Android device won't let me do it, but, using PDAnet, I can do it with my BlackBerry over Bluetooth or USB (BTW- both are MUCH more stable options than trying to set up an ad-hoc wifi.)
@ Sonarwave - you are getting a couple of points confused. The OP wants to set up a WiFi connection from the laptop to the Blackberry and use the BlackBerry's 3G data to access the web on the laptop. Think of it how a wireless router lets you share your cable/DSL connection. Basically, what the OP wants to do is turn their BB into a Wireless 3G router/modem.
For the most part, the WiFi chip (Or maybe it's just the driver stack) in the BB's does not support an AdHoc type of connection. Those Droid and iPhone devices are the same way, but the software is just emulating AdHoc and makes it much less stable than tethering by USB or Bluetooth.
@Rayford Booth - download PDAnet and use either the USB cable or pick up a cheap bluetooth adapter for your laptop. You'll have better results than trying to force the Wireless version.

I may be missing something -- always a distinct possibility -- but if the OP has wifi, why doesn't he just connect directly to it with the PC?
The only time I tether is when I don't have a wifi connection (or have to pay for it).
Jas - I don't think they have WiFi.
The way I'm reading the OP's post is this - Turn the BB into a 3G modem/router that the laptop connects to over WiFi to surf using the 3G. Say you were in the car and wanted to connect the laptop to the internet. You would fire up this App (I used PDAnet over Bluetooth myself) and the laptop would tether to the BB, and use it as a wireless/3G router/Modem and access the internet over 3G.
Sprint has phones (or is coming out with them very soon) that does this for up to 5 devices. There are also the "MyFi" devices on Verizon (&Sprint??) that do this as well. I was looking at 3Gstore.com, Mobile Broadband Made Easy. CradlePoint Routers, MiFi, Antennas, Amplifiers and Verizon & Sprint EVDO Modems. the other day. You can "lease" one of the Verizon MyFi devices from them for $49.99 a month and have upto 5 wireless devices access the internet. It's basically a micro 3G modem/Wifi Router all in one unit. That's what the OP want's to do with their BB.
Not use the BB as a WiFi relay to access an existing WiFi connection.
At least, that's the way, un-huh, un-hun, I read it... un-huh, un-huh!!! LOL
Ah, I see. Much easier to just set up the standard modem on the PC and tether either via USB or Bluetooth. Sprint may be allowing multiple devices to connect as you say, but I don't why you would want to turn the BB into a wireless router for multiple devices to access, given that this is the speed one gets with just one device connected (at least via a regular tether):

Agreed!!!
However, I have found the paid programs (Tether or PDAnet) to be MUCH easier to setup than the atandard modem, especially for the non-geeks! The whole adding the init string thing, and the drivers can be a little tricky.
Not only that, but going through Tether and PDAnet, my AT&T bill shows it as WAP data, and it does not ding me an extra data charge. But, if I do the standard modem, it shows differently on my bill and I get charged a few bucks for it.
@WolfmanRobby: I don't suppose you (or anyone else on crackberry) has tried Tether on Verizon, have you? We have a family share plan through them with the MiFi (a miserable little device IMO, but there's not much else out here in the middle of nowhere), but we seem to keep going over our usage, and Verizon takes great pride in gouging us out of $0.25/MB over the limit, and not telling us until we get a bill or log into their slow, unintuitive My Verizon system (went 1GB over last month, resulting in a $450 bill).
Basically what I want to know is, say this month we go over our 5Gb MiFi limit; if I installed Tether on a BlackBerry Curve 2 (8530), and we used Tether to get online, would Verizon charge us for that extra usage, or is it a back-door into the unlimited internet we pay for on the BB?
Update: I installed Tether on my laptop and the Curve2, and was able to get online VERY EASILY. Still waiting for a response regarding the charges, but just in case, I'm also closely watching the My Verizon to see if anything pops up. Also, the speed wasn't too horrible. About half what we get with the MiFi (522ping with 0.52Mbps d/l Tethered, compared to 202p and 0.93Mbps with the MiFi).
im curious about the same thing but lets say i got an ipad and wanted to use my 3g plan to connect instead of having to pay for the extra plan. so is this in any way possible?
im also inferring that the OP wants to use high bold as a wifi modem and not connect to a wifi network and then tether suck connection to his pc
@berry15, I think your T9 or something went a little screwy on that last post; lemme see if I understand you right. You want to tether your iPad to your BB-Bold (9000) and use the BB's 3G plan to get online with it?
If that's the case, then yes, but I think you have to jailbreak your iPad first. I know Apple is REALLY strict about not allowing tethering yet (at least not through BlueTooth; it'd be kind of hard for them to stop you from joining an Ad-Hoc WiFi, but I digress...). I just read a thread about it today when scouring CrackBerry for info about the Tether program (which was a big success, btw. just waiting to make sure VZW didn't catch on). Sorry I don't have a link, but a quick forum search should yield the article easily. It seemed pretty popular.
Edit: So I've been checking our online Verizon account, and so far they haven't caught on. Have to wait till the end of the month to make sure there's nothing extra on the bill, but it looks like Tether actually bypasses the extra broadband charges. It was something encouraging for me, so I figured I'd answer the question for anybody else looking to do the same ;).
this is an interesting question that I have been researching as well. I failed miserably trying to tether through BT
what is very apealing about Andriod is the WiFi tethering option that turns the phone into a hot-spot. so I would like to know if that is something that could be developed for BlackBerry? not on my 9630, but what about the 9650 or 9700 Bold? I am stuck with VZW and my 9630 for the moment, but the lure of Android (in particular the EVO on Sprint) is tugging at me. this solution would allow me to happily upgrade to a new BB again.....
Ad-hoc wifi is disabled on BB, see RIM's security doc:
Security features of a Wi-Fi enabled BlackBerry device
As for BT, I remember seeing a little app, that enables BT PAN profile. That may be handy for some users, as it is easy to set it up.
Good point, but doesn't completely kill us. Just makes it inconvenient. The device providing 802.11 infrastructure services is usually, but does not have to be, the same device providing the uplink and acting as the default gateway for the network.
You could conceivably have the phone acting as a client to some separate wifi AP, and simply point all the other clients (your laptops, presumably) to the phone's IP as default gateway. Then the phone would have to do routing or NAT (probably nat, as the provider only gives the phone one IP) to provide service to the network. Sounds awkward, since you'd need to tote around a separate device to act as AP.
Since tethering over bluetooth and USB is comparatively easy, it seems that the low-hanging fruit here is simply to tether a laptop and use ICS/NAT on it, to share the connection over its own wifi interface, with your other devices or friends. Depending on the OS and chipset, you may be stuck in ad-hoc mode, or you may be able to throw the laptop's wifi nic into AP mode (Search for "soft-AP" drivers). I know Ralink chips can do this under Windows, almost every chipset can do this under Linux.
I wonder if anyone's ever grafted a Bluetooth chip into a wrt54g or similar. Some of those have USB ports, and they all run linux internally, so it sounds like a simple matter of scripts to bring up the interface, combined with PDAnet on the phone. It'd mean carrying an extra piece of hardware, but you'd have wifi for a whole gaggle of laptops, using your phone's data plan, without any of those laptops playing master.
I know very little about BT PANs, might it be possible to "pair" several laptops to a PDAnet-enabled phone simultaneously? Probably not, as the single-IP problem would get messy. I think it's all PPP over the DUN service anyway. But could the laptops pair to each other using SPP and run PPP over it, with one lappy acting as NAT GW and talking to the phone? Thus avoiding the pain that is ad-hoc wifi, and the bulk of carrying a separate AP...
Wow, that is awful inconvenient. Windows Mobile is smelling better all the time.
