On the iPhone when you are in an area with a wifi signal it will make a popup to let you know. Is there anyway that a Blackberry can do this?

BlackBerry has no need of that feature.

Once a Wifi source has been added to the list, it will automatically activate the Wifi connection for as long as you are in the signal coverage area.

I have several programmed in my BlackBerry.

Correct. I am wanting something different. I want it to notify me when I walk into a new wifi zone. For instance; If I walk into Barnes & Noble and they have free wi-fi, I want my phone to tell me there is an available wi-fi source.

Why do you want to be alerted if it will automatically connect?

It won't automatically connect if it's never been set up on the BB before.

I too think it might be cool, but it might get annoying, lots of places have wifi now.

So I'm guessing there isn't any option or program that can accomplish this?
