I thought when WiFi was functional the WiFi symbol turned white, instead of a muted color. Instead I get a small red circle at the bottom right of the WiFi symbol. Is this the way it is supposed to work?

The little red circle might indicate that you have to log in to the WiFi network the BB is trying to connect to.
from what I understand.. the WIFI will show when it's connected back to RIM via wifi... i have been able to see my wireless network and connect to it, but unless I have a internet connection, it won't show WHITE wifi..
I also learned that the lil red dot is a connection to the wireless connection, but it requires a login.. ie. Hotel Room, Public Wifi with a disclaimer, etc..
I've had good luck so far...
Mine is white when it's connected and grayed out when it's not.
