Noob question but do I have to turn off Data Services to fully use wifi without suckering into my data plan or will wifi supersede the use of data plan and just run on the wifi network?

Data used over WiFi such as for web browsing does not get charged to you plan.

When you open your browser at the top right of your screen you will see you connection status. If it is something like 3G or edge or so on your using you data. If it has a wifi icon your using you wifi and will not tap into your data plan. So there's no need to shut off data services. Hope that helps.

You can also see if the WiFi is working by the WiFi logo on your homescreen in WHITE. if it is grayed out it is not active.

just another way to check, pic attached is the WiFi logo lit up white/active.
