    Hi,

Recently I traveled abroad and turned mobile data off so as not to incur data charges.

To my dismay I found that WIFI wouldn't work anywhere! After I had connected I always go the message "Unable to obtain IP address"

When I got back home I did a simple experiment:
Turn mobile data on - WIFI works like a charm
Turn mobile data off - WIFI doesn't work.

Seems like my service provider is trying to force me into using a data plan in order to use WIFI

My phone is the Bold 9000
Anybody know what this is about?
    Thanks,
    Dave.

I have, but only at home, when not roaming....
I assume you've also tried it while roaming?

I've tried it while roaming, and it works fine. And when out of the country I turned the cell network off and used wi-fi without a problem, since I don't have an international plan.

Choosing the "turn data off while roaming" and using wi-fi should work for you. If you get a charge for it (unlikely, I haven't had this problem), then I'd say you'd have a good basis for arguing with the provider about that one.

    Silly question
Wifi allows data to be pushed to the bb. So if you swithch off data then wifi data is included. Yes wifi is free and data via mobile network costs a lot and most people with personal bb's probably switch off their data when they go abroad but still you asked a dumb question matie

I did what Candy did when I was in the US and it worked great! I'm on Rogers (Canada) with an 8900.
