When I checked out this week's FutureShop flyer, I see the following page. The Q5 is the second most expensive phone on this page, even more expensive than the HTC One. I thought the Q5, was, for emerging markets, and supposedly a cheap BB10 phone...

Why would any "Average Joe" consumer buy a BlackBerry after seeing this ad from FutureShop (Canada)-screen-shot-2013-08-23-12.20.29-pm.png

On the following page the Z10 is a paltry $49. The Q10 is either $74 or $149... Make up your mind... This is very confusing to the Average Joe consumer. Ya, Ya, Ya, I know the carrier's are setting the price, etc. But $0 is better than $49 or $149, etc. to most uninformed consumers...

The Q5 is the low end model, but is also new to market. The Z10 and Q10 have both 'enjoyed' price cuts. They launched at 199/249 in most places, and rapidly dropped from there.

Early adaptor Joe already bought, Average Joe not buying, BBOS Joe is on the sidelines waiting ... Maybe 10.2 might convince some .

The "Average Joe" doesn't buy blackberries. I'm not sure that there's still a blackberry demographic left since business started switching.

Minor OS updates convince no Joes to buy, average or otherwise.

I agree that is confusing. every carrier has different pricing and a different listing. Take down here a BB ad and it will have 1 listing and price per phone and usually covers all carriers or its just featured for one carrier. Either way no confusion

lol, some of us bought a very expensive BlackBerry not so long ago (I bought a refurbished 9900 in 2012 for 250 which must be upwards of $300) and enjoy having the security and compression of BIS and don't want to 'learn' a whole new OS just so Mr '55 million dollar man' Heinz can get the big fat 'margins' that he craves. We also quite like Bridge and have a BlackBerry tablet as well.

I think the real news is the Q10 price. To slash it 50% when they are launching the Q5 suggests that the Q10 has stopped selling.
The Z10 price is old news. As early as July someone posted a Canadian site where unlocked Z10s were cheaper than the 9900s.

I found it strange..I checked with Rogers online to see how much it would be to upgrade by Bold early (about 6 months) to a Z10.
    $699 + $149 early upgrade fee + $25 Admin on a 2yr Contract!

Crazy I could buy off contract cheaper!

Other Android and Apple were the $199 etc.

The way to upgrade with any carrier is to tell them you are in a dead zone and are tired of them and you have this amazing deal from their main competitor, together with free TV, hot water, and soap. ThEn different pricing is in effect...

This doesn't get looked at but say someone buys the Q5 and they want to upgrade in the future buying out the reminder of their contact will be a fraction compared to the other phones. Another thing is that the monthly bill requirement for the Q5 falls in a cheaper bracket so they consumer could have a cheaper bill.

I was having a hard time understanding why anyone would buy the Q5 at that price.

That's weird that a Q5 would ever be priced higher than a Z10. But I remember T-Mobile here had a Curve for more than the Torch 9810 once. Who knows. Carriers do weird sh1t all the time, it seems.

this is all extremely misleading...for example the GS3 for $50 is only for existing fido customers upgrading to a current plan and using the tab24 agreement (2 year plan). Non-fido customers have to pay $150 for it on a tab24. its designed to move customers from older grandfathered plans (that gave you an awesome deal) to newer plans that are not so value-rich for the customer. Its all a form of marketing. when you compare like-for-like, the Q5 is actually cheaper (still not cheap enough IMO) but, the OP is right, with all the marketing misdirection, its not appealing in the least.
