It makes sense what he's doing. It just sucks for RIM, CrackBerry fans and BlackBerry fans. Because he WAS the biggest BlackBerry "fan boy" there was. He's moved on, and that's cool, a lot of us use different phones too.
It just isn't the same having the CrackBerry site creator rally for other platforms. He has to be equal now.
It was fun to root for your "team" and have competition and comparison, and have Kevin excited about BlackBerry.
To continue the sports analogy (which IMHO is a flawed analogy, but hey, people seem to associate well with it)... I'll use my undying love for the Denver Broncos as an example. I'm a die hard fan, will watch every game if possible, even when they're sucking rocks. I have a moderate amount of Broncos t-shirts and jerseys, and on game day will most likely be seen to be wearing one of them. But on days when they're not playing, and I'm going out to watch a different game with friends, there's a relatively good chance I will wear a shirt/jersey of one of the teams that are playing should I happen to own one. And when I am watching my Broncos play, even if they're getting pounded into the turf, I am fully capable of giving props to the team that delivered the smack-down. Does this make me any less of a fan? no! I'm 44 years old, became the fan at the age of 5, have watched them struggle for more years than they have dominated, and will watch them struggle for another 20 years if that's what it takes to see another championship.
Anyhoo... the reason the sports analogy is flawed, is for one simple reason. Fans of sports teams are not rooting for other teams to go out of business and disappear or become irrelevant. The fans expect to see those same teams next year, and capable of providing excitement and competition. In this silly "we're at war" mentality you see from the fans in the mobile/smartphone industry, the objective seems to be a hope the competition fails and falls into oblivion.Last edited by rmjones101; 03-18-12 at 05:30 PM.

We all have to mind our businesses to keep the dollars coming in so we can buy our toys. Kevin is responsible for multiple platforms for his job. Surely you have to do distasteful things in your job, but you gut up ans do them.
The fact that he prefers RIM when he can have any platform, speaks to his keen sense of what makes RIM superior .
Now let's get back to the important discussions, like the industry-led media conspiracy that continues to manufacture and focus on biased stories and editorials that slam RIM...03-18-12 05:55 PMLike 0 -

So a few things here that I guess I need to point out, just to calm you all down so we can get back to our regular programming schedule:
A) FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER! @crackberrykevin. If you did that, maybe this thread would never have started. As Michelle pointed out, I was very up front about what was going on:
At the same time, some of you need to read the blogs more and should probably also listen to our CrackBerry Podcasts (which we don't record all that often, so keeping up isn't that hard) so you can keep up with the CBK dialog between blog and forum posts if that's something you're interested in. Chrisy520 - it's clear you haven't. For having so many forum posts, you really come across as not having a clear understanding of CrackBerry/Smartphone Experts/Mobile Nations/etc. If you did, you wouldn't type some of the things you did on this thread. No offense intended here, just telling you how I feel as you have told how you feel on this thread. Maybe we should catch up on a call one of these days and I can answer any questions you may have and fill in the gaps for you.
Everybody/anybody who follows me closely knows that BlackBerry Fanboy #1 IS and always will be BlackBerry Fanboy #1. BB4Life! I always have a BlackBerry as my primary smartphone. I own and try lots of other phones, tablets, etc. Every now and then I even try and go non-BB for a few days. But no matter what it's always the BlackBerry Experience that keeps me going. They have it right. I think I explained it well on this thread does anybody still use a BlackBerry?
I own every smartphone of note... Galaxy Nexus, iPhone 4S, Bold 9900 and every BB.
BlackBerry is still by far the best communication tool. When I try and switch to something else, I just feel unproductive. I'm wasting time... since i know I can do it better on a BB.
The 80% of things I do on a smartphone through the day to day, I do quicker and better on a BlackBerry. On the 20% of other things (where the other platforms are arguably "superior" right now), I just also own a tablet for that. I'm ok with lacking on the 20% knowing I'm better at 80% of what I do.
Time is money. I'll take the better experience for the 80% over giving that up for a better 20%.
And when BlackBerry 10 hits, BlackBerry will be 100% better at everything.
Yours Truly,
#1 BlackBerry Fanboy.
The way to NOT be a #1 Fanboy is to NOT be knowledgeable about the competition. Going back to our first Smartphone Round Robin, shortly after the original iPhone hit the market, was when I began making it habit to buy and use devices from all platforms. I've owned all the iPhones and iPads, bought the Touchpad and had Android phones and tablets. Doesn't make me any less of a BB fan - it makes me a better leader of CrackBerry Nation. Listen to my recent guest appearance on the Engadget Mobile Podcast. You can't debate with people and win if you don't know every side of the story (also, listen to that podcast and tell me that you don't think I deserve the title of Fearless Leader of CrackBerry Nation... I dare you.).
B) Fearless Leader of CrackBerry Nation... for life! Sorry folks, there will be no election for a new Fearless Leader of CB. It doesn't work that way. Heck, over the last three years I've tried to clone as much of myself onto Adam Zeis just in case I ever went to CrackBerry Heaven that he could keep writing under my name for years to come before anybody figured it out. Lol.
C) No Apologies.... Sorry to anybody who mentioned wanting an apology, you won't get one here. None is needed, unless you want me to apologize for being awesome at what I do. First off, in case you don't know the back story, CrackBerry became part of Smartphone Experts (SPE) back on August 1st, 2007. This is a LONG time ago (CrackBerry only officially launched in February 2007). So to the couple of posts on this thread that say something changed when CB became part of SPE is complete nonsense. CB was still in its infancy then and all of the growth and awesomeness (and the pre-Storm days) were as part of SPE. Mobile Nations was just a re-branding from Smartphone Experts as our network name. Nothing changed operationally with Mobile Nations that wasn't the same as in 2007. We definitely have some great new things planned for the future (like unified login, which on our recent forum survey like 95% of you requested having), but nothing changed with CrackBerry or our strategy with the introduction of Mobile Nations. We've always known that over years users are going to switch around platforms - that's why SPE wanted CB back in 2007 and also why I wanted to be part of SPE. It only made sense to cover all of the platforms as we know owners will change around, come back, leave for a bit, etc.
D) Founder, EiC of CrackBerry.com + Chief Media Officer of Mobile Nations- With a title like that I'm definitely BUSY as all heck these days and also have a lot on my plate. Things have been crazy this past year. Prior to May 2011 my day to day focus was mainly on CrackBerry.com. The need emerged for me to step up into that larger cross site CMO role. I'm definitely stretched, but luckily over the years we've built an awesome CrackBerry team here that is able to keep the site rocking and rolling even at at the times when I'm now tied up with some of my additional responsibilities. Right now we have a LOT of awesome projects going on which are taking up a lot of my time - but my plan is to work through these projects and really execute well on them, which will then help free up more of time so I'm able to always keep a good chunk of my day focused on CB. Gotta work hard now so I can free up more time later.
And as for the whole Kevin put on an iMore shirt and that kind of thing, it's not that big of a deal. Look, we all have our primary sites and favorite platforms. But we're still united. That's the reason we loved the Mobile Nations name and concept so much. Each site is its own passionate community (or nation), but we're all aligned with the same goals and we all get along. We can visit each other. Rene needed me to help him cover iPad launch day and I did. Last year at CES I needed his help covering PlayBook, and he helped. Sometimes Phil at AndroidCentral goes to shows and covers iOS and Windows Phone. And everybody on the other sites would also cover BlackBerry for me if/when I asked them. Heck, we have Bla1ze blogging across sites now (his alter ego is Chris Parsons). He such a good guy it would be a shame not share him a bit with the rest of Mobile Nations. Anybody who thinks it is not understanding the big picture. If you want to get a sense of our "structure", take a look at the Who We Are page on MobileNations.com. The MobileNations.com site is still pretty bare, but this thread has prompted me to realize we need to do a better job of telling our "story", so I think we'll get this done soon so anybody who's interested can more easily get what were all about and how we work. Again, I love the passion of our community - a thread like this isn't surprising to see, but at the same time it's very easy to understand the whole picture and figure out what is from what isn't. Reading through the thread, it looks like most of you are all good now and understanding it all. Yay!
E) CrackBerry & BlackBerry FTW: End of the day, and as I said at the end of my interview with Thorsten Heins interview, I'm really more excited than ever for BlackBerry and CrackBerry:
As we concluded our first Q&A with RIM's new CEO, I quit with the questions and opened things up for Thorsten Heins to address CrackBerry Nation directly. For all our longtime members, readers and BlackBerry fans around the world, this is for you... an address to CrackBerry Nation, from the CEO of Research In Motion himself:
First, I want you to be our #1 Fan Club, that's for sure. Second, give us feedback. I want you to be with us, I want you to help us to always get better, and give us credit for what our people are doing. Understand how much and how hard the people here are working and I think you're doing a good job of this. I'm ready to stay in touch with you Kevin and your base. We will make this a journey together, and it's going to be fun.
Honestly, it's hard for me not to get emotional reading those words. When CrackBerry.com went live in February 2007, I really didn't know what the future would hold for us. All I knew was that I was hopeful and excited for the future of BlackBerry and CrackBerry. As Resesarch In Motion enters a new era, I'm having the same feelings again as I did five years ago. Hopeful and excited. Let's Rock & Roll This CrackBerry Nation!!
I know lots of RIM employees, I know the CEO, and they all know me and CrackBerry and Mobile Nations, and they all know that putting on a iMore t-shirt to help our Rene is not a change of heart for CrackBerry Kevin nor is it a slight against RIM/BlackBerry. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. That said, I'd MUCH rather be on CNN and NBC talking about the launch of BlackBerry 10 phones and a next generation tablet. In the meantime I'm gonna be working out like crazy so I look HAWT on TV for those interviews.
Everybody happy now? Can we move this thread to the off topic? Lol.
Love Ya! Yours truly,
CrackBerry Kevin, #1 BlackBerry Fanboy and Fearless Leader of CrackBerry Nation
and if you think otherwise I challenge you to a RoShamBo... but warning, I get to go first
