Currently a Bold user, I plan to keep my Bold for two years. When my contract expires, I will search for a new BB. By then, I will expect a device that has some major upgrades. It makes me grin when I read posts that complain about new BB devices not being solid upgrades when they own a model that was just released a year ago. I went searching through the Onyx/Merlin threads, and the posters seemed disgusted that the Onyx isn't a worthy upgrade from the Bold. Ladies and gentlmen, upgrading your device every year is only going to leave you broke and disappointed. I'm not sure if its a coincidence or not, but a worthy upgrade takes about two years, which is also the length of a contract. If you bought a Bold last November, the Onyx is not going to be a worthy upgrade for you. If you had the 8820, it will be. Even with other devices, the equation holds true. If you were a first generation Iphone user, Iphone 3G wasn't that big of a deal. If you owned the Iphone 3G, the Iphone 3GS is such a far stretch. However, if you had the original Iphone and took advantage of your two year contract renewal/upgrade to the 3GS, you saw a big improvement. The Onyx is a great device and will probably takeover the Bold as the best BB. But if you have a Bold already, it's not for you. If you have a Curve 8320, the 8520 is not for you. Be patient and you will eventually come across a BB that is a worthy upgrade.
It depends. Some of the BBs have been out for quite a while, you mentioned the 88XX, but the Pearl and Curve series have been out for a while as well.
So if you buy a product when it has already been out for more than one year, by your reasoning, the person should stick with that older model for another two years before upgrading?
While I agree with you in general, I would think (and like to think) that the Storm 2 will be much improved over the Storm 1. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Storm, but a year's worth of returns and complaints (I'm sure SOME were legit) would likely lead to a better device all-around.
...now watch it come out with the same app mem and no WiFi

Reason: inexplicably misspelled word
Or if someone just has the money outright, and is willing to pay retail, why not?
It comes down to if someone has the money or means to buy something. Who are we to say it's a waste or will be disappointed? But I do respect your opinion.

If you have an older model, then no, that doesn't apply. But if you have bought a new model BB in the last year. You shouldn't expect huge changes with devices due to be released this year.
As a VIP customer with Verizon, they push me well before my two years are up to upgrade. I have a Tour now, but technically wasn't eligible for an upgrade until this October, they were pushing me to get a new device toward the end of February, right at one year...

If you look at the specs of the upcoming Storm 2, they are very similar to the device that you already have. With the 5.0 OS update, the two phones are going to be strikingly similar with the exception of minor differences.
If you want to spend the money to upgrade then by all means. My post was directed to those who seem to be upset that the upcoming phones aren't that much better than the device they bought late last year.

I see where you're coming from, but if you're like me, and came fron a Pearl, the Tour is unbelieveable. Also, many who have the 8330 Curve, who now have a Tour, say the keyboard, screen, and memory capacity, Unlocked GPS, crushes the Curve...
This is true. They let you upgrade sooner than 2 years and sometimes the upgrade is to a phone that doesn't do much more. And the price from ATT for a new upgrade phone. Aaaarrrrgggghhh!!!

Thankyou for your thoughts.. I never thought about it in that matter. I currently keep switching between the Bold and the 8900 and debating on the 8520 when it arrives this week. What a waste............
Everyone wants the latest and the greatest. If someone's gonna replace their car every couple of years, they may as well upgrade their phone every chance they get.

Um... They just pried my Motorola Startac out of my hands in March.
Some of the young guys at the verizon store had never seen one.

Some people rather pi$$ their money away on phones. I only got one because my wife needed one for work and it was a BOGO offer. Do I regret upgrading? A little. I was happy with my LG Chocolate 2 because I hate talking on my phone in the 1st place. I like my Storm. I don't have nearly as many issues as others. I'll wait until my 2 year is up and maybe we'll have a Storm 3 or something like that. I get my phone calls, emails, texts, internet, music, and pics. What more do I need?
I was planning to keep my 8320 until the Driftwood comes out but the device locked up constantly and leaked memory bad. So I had to reluctantly get the 8900. I'll finally keep a device for 2 years when I get the Driftwood though. It will be the perfect BB.
