Why hasn't RIM given 'browser' a name?
- IE Got a Name because it had to Compete with NetScape, and the Term browser wasn't really a well understood term,
Safari Got a name because it had to compete with IE, they needed to Brand themselves as an Alternative to IE, and are on multiple devices now.
Chrome got a name as an Alternative to IE, and googles push into consumer software
BlackBerry Browser is Native, It requires no advertising as people will use it because it is Native, Alternative browsers must make their names to be downloaded onto a BlackBerry.
It would be a waste of marketing dollars and branding to focus on branding the BlackBerry Browser.
Maybe in the Future you'll see it called something Different, but really BB Browser will probably become the name and the Branding.

We all know safari that gets installed with any Apple products ; which is nothing special... why wouldnt bb's browser have a name. We could be talking about the newest version of 'Blackbird' (or something) on the Playbook...etc instead of something that has no presence in one's memory.

- All of the other browsers that were mentioned such as Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome already had a desktop component before they were translated into a mobile version.
The reason Apple (Safari) and Microsoft (Pocket Internet Explorer) maintained the names when they moved to the mobile OS was because they knew that they would be able to use the name recognition for the existing browsing software to drive home the point that the pocket device contained a full blown browser that was mature, etc etc.
The Playbook browser is totally different and giving it some cryptic name just for the of it would serve no purpose but to further confuse people who stop to look at it in your local best buy, etc. Apple can get away with naming the browser Safari because they have enough mind share that everyone who walks by an iPad knows the browser is called Safari.
Now, if RIM decided to release a desktop version of their browser, then maybe some unique branding would be helpful. I highly doubt that's going to happen though.01-24-12 11:33 PMLike 0 - Take the BBM tact and let the users name it if they care enough. BB needs something with a bit swagger, something like BB Browser Brat - it's the new kid with attitude. This might not be the right place for an image infusion but one is needed and with kids getting hooked on bbm (mine loves it, not crazy about her phone though) maybe a browser/bbm integration would be cool, what would that look like?01-24-12 11:34 PMLike 0

RIM would need different names to cater to the fundamentalist religions then.
Brother Browser for Christians
Cow Browser for Hindus
Kosher Browser, Salaam Browser the list is endless.01-25-12 02:05 AMLike 0 - I think the OP has a point here from a marketing point of view.
Everybody associates Safari with Apple
IE with Microsoft
Chrome with Google
As we are already BB users we don't really care but for new potential customerps it's a different story. And when BB10 hits the market I think naming the browser even becomes more interesting.
For instance with the OS 2.0 update for the playbook there will be some browser tweaks that will make it even better than it already is.
And since BB10 and OS 2.0 are practically the same people can refer to the browser on the playbook. This could stimulate more sales of BB10 devices.
Offcourse I'm aware this can also work the other way around when the browser isn't that good on os 2.0 but I think the browser is already really good on the playbook.
To the OP, what would you call the browser?
I was thinking about Cruise (marketing slogan: cruising the web with BB Cruise)
01-25-12 02:08 AMLike 0 - I get both sides of this.
If RIM was going to go with the marketing aspect, you could hear it now; "BlackBerry, the ONLY device to give you the ********** web browser!"
This browser, I don't think, is so spectacular that it should be made into a big marketing point. I tend to agree with the other side; the other browsers exist in multiple places. You can't download or use the BB browser anywhere else but on a BB, so what other purpose (if some breed of marketing isn't on your mind) would be served by naming a browser that doesn't have any need for distinction?
I think it's fun anyway. You're in a situation where you need to look something up. You're talking to someone and you say "let me hit the browser real quick and take a look." They respond "what browser are you using?" You respond "The Browser."...this could go on a while
There's your name right there eh? "The Browser."01-25-12 02:11 AMLike 0 - I'd never even noticed that RIM don't "brand" their Browser, although I think calling it something elegant like BlackBird would work well in their commercials. We might be straight forward people, but Apple's adverts work so well because they are relatable, so if the BB10 adverts said "with our latest BlackBird browser, to fly you through the full web", I do think that would add a little value to it.
BBM is an example of something that started as generic (BlackBerry Messenger) and then got branded, and it's been beneficial to RIM.
