They could be selling phones from their site unlocked as does Apple.
Now before you jumped all over me for the Apple comment, Apple wasnt always where they are now.

By selling direct they would have the current update etc....
Canada doesnt seem to be too bad, but reading comments on here, the US carriers and the stores dont seem all that excited to sell BB devices. As far as needing the US carrier support, it seems to me non exsistent so it would be no loss.
Maybe someone could shed some light on this.

I don't think BlackBerry is any position to further **** off carriers.

We're talking about full retail pricing, like ~$600, so it would never be a runaway success stealing major business from retailers.

In some cases (Sprint!) it might have salvaged some clients too.

Valid point. I'm sure I saw a thread about this quite some time ago but I, for the life of me, can't remember what the reasoning behind not selling them unlocked themselves was...

They used to with some generations of legacy BBOS devices. No idea when or why they stopped.

One is conflict with your customers which really are the carriers.
Second, I strongly suspect BBRY does not wish to comply with the various laws which would become immediately applicable if they become a "retailer" in terms of warranties, customer service, etc. They probably are thinking it would cost them too much.

In an interview with TH some time before the ER, he was asked directly by a customer whether Blackberry will offer something to consumers like Apple and Sony do in terms of customer service. He replied "no" and said consumers would have to work with the carriers because consumers buy from the carriers. TH said BBRY would provide "Youtube videos." I recall TH mentioned something about BBRY "centers" or stores but did not sound very promising.
It struck me as a very poor response and a very poor direction for the company long term.

How about someone like Crackberry doing this instead? They could make sure the latest OS is always available. They do sell accessories so what not go one step further?
