If I have my BlackBerry connected to an A/C charger and I pull the battery why doesn't it stay on?

because the circuit gets broken.
the charger links directly to the battery to charge it iirc.
i guess its because the circuit is closed by the battery, so even if you have the charger on with battery out, it wont work. also they probably designed it on purpose, so that you have to turn the phone off when changing/taking out the SIM card/memory, because otherwise the phone wont work properly
It does seem silly when my laptop doesn't need the battery in it to work.

The battery charger is just that - a charger for the battery. It's not an alternate power supply. The bb is designed to run off of the battery.

The charger provides power to the battery. In the case of a battery being fully charged, the battery acts as a pass through (which is why it is ok to leave it plugged into the charger after it fully charges) to power the device. If you remove the battery, that path is broken, and there is no way for the cord to power the device itself.
The battery is fed with electricity from the a/c.
The battery is then powering the blackberry. Not possible bro.
