The videos opening the developer's conference was a nice lighthearted way to start the sessions. The first two videos were pretty good, especially with the humor going into what developers were dealing with. The third one wasn't as good, but it went right along with the others.

They were definitely taken out of context if they think they were made as a general marketing video.

Who is responsible for marketing? That French bloke from orange? Double castration. Can't believe he allows this. This is insulting for a corporate video, not to mention that this is available to general public. Horrid ****e

This video ultimately hurts BlackBerry, I'm ashamed Thorsten allowed it.

The Verge had one of the most balanced neutral and fair reviews of the Z10 on it's release if I remember.
Why are people so quick to slam sites? Ah well.

The stupid music video is so trivial that it really shows that the Verge has no integrity at all if in fact it claims to be a news site. The site is what it is, pornography for people that have an Apple fetish.
I'm beginning to think that blaming Apple for BBRY's negative coverage is its own fetish (to be clear, I'm not claiming that's what you are doing).

Why do people think this is the work of the marketing team at BlackBerry?

    Are you really that stupid?

The music videos were made by the Dev Relations team as a fun way to communicate with devs. All videos were released at a developer event, followed by the BlackBerryDev YouTube channel.

You don't see Thorsten or Frank Boulben in the videos, do you? No. Want to know why? They aren't devs, that's why.

LOL - it's a silly "tongue in cheek" video for developers that doesn't get wide distribution. You won't see it on TV or outside of a few tech blogs and that will be brief.

It's not like this, which I see on TV, in theatres before movies etc all the time

When I saw this in the theatres on Sunday the whole audience stopped, paid attention and then started chattering about it.

All external public communication is either marketing or PR. No other way about it. You can't have employees produce public communication pieces that are this bad. If it's not done by the marketing team, they are the ones who should have blocked this from going public. Because it's not fun, and destroys the brand. All external communication must be controlled by the marketing and pr teams, end of story.

    Are you developer?

I'm gonna say no. Meaning, the video wasn't meant for you.

Sure you can watch it, but it wasn't meant to "connect" with you.

I read the Verge on a daily basis but their Apple bias is getting disgusting. Josh is the only one that isn't afraid to post anything negative about them.

Their new campaigns are quite hypocritical as well.

Seriously, you need to chill. This is not a public communications piece. It's a campy music video for developers and an outlet for these guys to expend what would otherwise be their mid-life crisis energy. It's pretty clear from the "production values" that the marketing/pr teams had little to do with this.

Again, it's was not for the general consumer. But in true exploitative fashion, tech "papparrazi" bloggers make it a big deal to stir readership and further their own narrative anyways.

There are other ways to reach developers, alternative to going through YouTube. You know how many views did the first video get? In the region of 450K, does BlackBerry even have 1/10 of that amount in developers? So even though it may have been directed at developers, this is definitely NOT, where this "Fun" communication is going.

I don't think The Verge has a hate-on for BlackBerry. Their review of the Z10 was fair, and if they don't like the video - that's fine - they can say that!

Verge doesn't hate BlackBerry, they just have a blatant fetish for the iPhone. It's so slickly well designed that it's one of the only tech sites that I feel I am missing out on by not reading, but I just can't stomach the bias the writers have towards anything Apple. What they left behind at Engadget I feel is more neutral and objective. Then there's Ars Technica which is leagues above either in journalistic integrity for a tech site, so I have no need or time for the Verge despite its visual appeal.

As for the video, if the CEO or VP or whomever at my company rocked out, I would think pretty highly of them. I agree it was a very stupid idea to slickly produce in HD and release it... it should have been just a low res video capture for people inside BBRY to joke about and even if posted online, no one would mock it.

Then why did the PR team pitch news outlets such as AllThingsD, The Verge, Mashable (where I work) and I'm assuming Crackberry about the existence of said video?

This was absolutely the marketing team's attempt to recapture what they saw as a "viral" moment with the first horrid music video, only this time it landed even less well.

If this was really just for developers -- the PR people wouldn't have pitched it. They did. While I'm of the opinion that it's best to ignore these pathetic stunts and attempts at promotion/publicity, I also understand the perspective that it's important to call companies out for doing stupid stuff. This was stupid.

    Listen,
    1. What makes you think I want the job in the first place?
    2. You don't need to have skills in mobile industry in order to spot rubbish marketing. You either can create a marketing message or you can't. Marketing team that allows middle aged men performing lame songs become part of their marketing mix are either suicidal or ********.
    3. Orange were very very good at their marketing. Especially in creating product surrounds, like orange Wednesdays. So things like hiring Alicia Keys and these Saunders efforts, makes me doubt that marketing is putting their back into what they are doing.
