There is actually some perverse logic in MS's numbering, but I doubt it's the real reason.

360 degrees in a circle, turn full circle and you're back at 0 degrees... next number is one.

But, the BBX mash-up explanations given above are the real reason for the jump from 7 to 10 AFAIK. It was all over these forums at the time. Someone in BB legal must have dropped the ball when it came to checking if that name was in use by another company.

@bobshine: there's a fairly straightforward explanation for that... you should maybe ask your parents to explain. Don't settle for the birds and bees explanation, which confused me for years.
Bbry legal probably thought they could get away with it just like bbm Canada vs rim case even though bbm predates rim by 60years

Just like bbry won against bbm trademark in Canada which is a actual company in Canada that actively uses the name
It was ruled that there was no way someone could mistaken bbm Canada with bbm app
Even though bbm Canada actually received support calls for bbm

It was always my understanding that BlackBerry 10 was named such because it is a platform designed to last 10 years due to its advanced capabilities. I think Thor mentioned this during development.

From your keyboard, to Microsoft's marketing department... stranger things have happened.

Make sure you claim your royalties for thinking of it first.

Why did Microsoft skip everything between Windows 3.1 and Windows 7?

    Posted via CB10
Because Windows 7 is actually 6.1, but you know that.

    NT 4
    WK2 5.0
    XP 5.1

Still doesn't explain the lack of Windows 9-94, 96-97 and 99-1999.

It kind of clearly states that there is a huge difference between the two Os's..they wanted it to have an X factor..apparently it was named "BlackBerry X" initially. But they changed it to Blackberry 10 after a competitor (don't know who) raised copyright issues. I read somewhere about it.

    Posted from my SuperHuman Q10
That's always been my understanding. It was going to be BBX, a combination of BlackBerry and QNX, but there was already a copyright on that. So they replaced the X with 10 because X is the Roman numeral for 10.

To take that further, why give Windows 7 that name when it's Windows NT 6.1 according to its build ID in command prompt?
