I am just wondering about their naming of the OS

As far as I am aware, BlackBerry skipped the eighth and nineth OS and went straight to BlackBerry 10 right?

So why the jump in number? Why not just call it BlackBerry 8?

We could speculate that BlackBerry Tablet OS 1.0 was BlackBerry 8, and 2.0 was BlackBerry 9, both used for the BlackBerry PlayBook.

I guess we'll never know for sure.

Mr. Heins must be like, 'Man, we've to progress, and since I'm not giving rat's *** for PlayBook and it's on OS 2.0 and will be discontinued and we have been planning to think about os 8, why not add not add both of them and create something new.' that's how os 10 was created by addition of os8+os2= os 10.

    Theory 2.
Os 7 and os 2 were out on a date, because it was os7's happy birthday and he was going to turn os 8. That night, they were like 'how would our baby look like?'
They were like let's bridge and see, and a blackberry 10 was born.

    Theory 3.
I don't really know man. Maybe they should release a diary and story behind the idea of BlackBerry 10.

It kind of clearly states that there is a huge difference between the two Os's..they wanted it to have an X factor..apparently it was named "BlackBerry X" initially. But they changed it to Blackberry 10 after a competitor (don't know who) raised copyright issues. I read somewhere about it.

Because the original name of BlackBerry 10 was BBX due to QNX but a Company already took this name and sued BlackBerry so it turns to BB10.

Check the old news and you will see...

Software versioning can be meaningless. 10 sounds a lot cooler than 8. 8 would also imply a link to the traditional BlackBerry OS. Which, there's not.

    ^^^ This.

When RIM acquired QNX, the first phone OS they released with the new QNX kernel was named by mashing BBOS and QNX into one name. Thus BBX was born (though prior to the announcement, everybody on the forums referred to it as BBQNX). A trademark dispute ensued with Basis Software who already had a product trademarked as BBx. RIM eventually just morphed the X in BBX to a 10 (based on the roman numeral), and thus BB10 was born.

The reason is that they wanted a fresh slate. Something that would differentiate from the old Java based OS. If they named it OS8, people would just think it's OS7's next update

There is actually some perverse logic in MS's numbering, but I doubt it's the real reason.

360 degrees in a circle, turn full circle and you're back at 0 degrees... next number is one.

But, the BBX mash-up explanations given above are the real reason for the jump from 7 to 10 AFAIK. It was all over these forums at the time. Someone in BB legal must have dropped the ball when it came to checking if that name was in use by another company.

@bobshine: there's a fairly straightforward explanation for that... you should maybe ask your parents to explain. Don't settle for the birds and bees explanation, which confused me for years.
