1XEV is 3G. That is how it is expressed on CDMA carriers (Verizon, Sprint, etc)
Sorry but seriously, this made my night, LMAO
Does that depend on the device AG? I have an 8530 with Verizon and I always have the 3G symbol.
Nope, 1XEV is always 3g. There are some themes that replace that with a "3G"
symbol, but no matter the device it 1XEV is a 3G protocol.
Also, some carriers may have gone to the 3G symbol as a result of the "great
map war" of 2009 :p
There are some 5.0 OS's that show 3G instead of 1XEV. The VZW 8530 shipped with one of these OS's. It comes out of the box showing 3G instead of 1XEV. (At least it did a few months ago)
The hybrid OS I'm using on my Tour displays 3G as well.
Edit: that doesn't change the fact that AG is right, though. It's all for aesthetics. 1XEV is 3G on CDMA. It just makes some people feel better when they see 3G, lol.

Thanks for that follow up traveling (not a) fool. Not being on a CDMA carrier I did
not know that some OSs actually changed that.
3G is technically a marketing name for GSM next generation data. EVDO is the marketing name for CDMA data. They are basically the same thing because they support data of up to 3+ mbps.
people running the Tour Hybrid OS's, will see the 3G symbol in place of the 1XEV. this is due to either theme or OS controls they implemented. regular verizon or other CDMA OS's will continue to show "1XEV" instead of 3G. either way, 1XEV is a 3G technology. so dont worry. youre on 3G. "3G" is something that you will see mostly on GSM phone screens. if you seen "1X" on a CDMA phone, you arent on a 3G network.
Upgrade to 5.0 and your phone should say 3G with the little BlackBerry logo.
people who i know that have the Tour that upgraded OTA (not a real, full OS upgrade) do NOT show "3G". some people i know that downloaded the full OS and upgraded via loader or DM do show the "3G" instead. but most of them are people who upgraded to the hybrid over the .591 OS.
Lol @ "not a fool.". You're welcome, AG. The only reason I knew about the 8530 is that when I went to purchase my Tour, the display 8530 next to the 9630 in the VZW store had a stock OS and stock theme and it showed 3G instead of 1XEV.

Anyone who upgraded to 5.0 OTA on a VZW 9630 had one choice; 5.0.0.591, (the piece of poo poo that it is) and .591(both releases) does not show 3G, it shows 1XEV. Upgrading to .591 over DM makes no difference as to the 3G symbol being displayed. Nobody with a VZW 9630 who upgraded via OTA, DM, or any other means sees the 3G symbol on the stock .591 unless it is in a theme they are using.
