i have an 8-whatevergig memory card, however Im kind of clueless as to how much that is......(is that equivalent to 2 1.5 hour movies, 1000 pics, etc)

I am going to be visiting NYC and think I will only take BB for pics and videos. However I cant find where it tells me how much space I have left on it.

Go to Settings>Options>Memory>Then scroll all the way down until you get to Memory Card. Should show you Total and Free Space.

If the movies were encoded to 3gp, which is the same video the phone takes, you could fit over 20 full length movies on the card.

That also means over 12,000 pictures or 1600 mp3s
