I try to read every post in the a thread. If I'm off for a day or two I might skim the thread, but don't usually post then.
I always go back and read the post if its quoted, common courtesy.
I tend to go through all the pages before making a comment... but I seldom get into discussions as they become very hostile lol
I try to do the same. However, if a thread gets to be 5+ pages long, it is pretty much impossible to read every post.
I have my settings for 40 posts per page, if the thread as more than 5 pages, I'll usually read the first page to see if what I want to say to the OP has been covered, and then I'll read the last page to see if the thread is still on topic,
and reply to any posts in the thread I feel the need to comment on, if those posts have a quoted post I'll go back and read the quote chain,
i usually read all the posts. I enjoy seeing what people have to say.

I will continue to read all the posts so long as the comments are staying on topic. Too often when a thread gets several pages long the posts are no longer relevant to the OP.
The level of interest in the topic determines whether I'll read a multiple page post or not. I will usually read the whole thing if I plan to comment.

I'd hate to post and have someone tell me I'm reposting something from a previous page. I've seen members posting after reading only the first page or OP even - page numbers and the next buttons are at top and bottom of each page in any thread, mobile or full site. Plus you never know if you're going to come across something interesting - there's tons of dolts out there, droves of intelligent folk exist too; and sometimes those midling pages are worth a read even if the thread seems to have gotten off topic. I like deRusset's method, but probably won't employ it judiciously because I'd still wonder if I missed something. >.<

Oh boy on this one I for sure agree... The longer a thread gets I have learned that things get WAY off topic and people start talking about things the OP had no intentions on knowing with the thread topic. i don't know if it is because people are building up their post and thanks count or what and it almost always seem to be the same people.
My only guilt is I get long winded which I admid to like now but I say what I feel and only offer advice where relavent and move on.
I try to read the first 2 or 3 pages of a long page and reply to anything that seems interesting. If the thread is longer than 5 pages, then I only read the last couple pages before replying.
Like others have said, I know that if a topic goes too long it has more than likely just turned in to arguing. So I'll usually just read the first page of long threads.
It's fun to see who digs up the post from 2007 and replies. I usually read the op, then skim through if there are several multiples. Even with the ones with numerous responses it's good to review them, then add what everyone may have left out.

You don't have an option for me: I speed-read (or, more accurately, I "skim"). And I don't ALWAYS catch every subtle detail, but I usually get the gist of the convo. (and then there's a tiny handful of clowns who's posts are shielded from my irritated eyes. :) )

I tend to read a lot of the old threads more then the newer ones. For research purposes though.

I think it's a little easier for me to follow what's posted in threads that I post in as I'm not a heavy poster. Since finding the subscription option, following threads has been easy as pie. I'll read the email notification and keep up that way.
I post and read other replies. I thought this was a chain letter thread
