I have seen many people in the various threads here in my time and have always wondered why would you have a blackberry if you don't also have the data plan to take advantage of the data portion of the phone? Is it just a status symbol for some or is there something that I'm missing here?

    Do you agree or disagree?

I've often wondered this myself. If you get a BB without a data plan, save yourself the money and get a Samsung slider or a Motorola flip!

For what I am sure will not be the last time, if a person decides
that a BB (pick any one) has the features, form factor, style, etc
that they are looking and the just want to use it as a basic telephone,
that is perfectly fine. It's their money, their choice.

Also if the model has Wi-Fi there is still a lot they can do.
I don't see it as a status symbol, just a person who chose
the phone they happen to like.

Maybe they need/want pda features and have to have a phone and only want to carry one device. That would be my guess. My carrier doesn't even give me the option to not have data, but even if I did I would still have unlimited data cause I'm always browsing

Gosh AG, why do you always have to be so right? Personally I would never purchase a PDA and not have a data plan, but as AG said, it's their money and who am I to tell them how to spend it.

Another point to this issue is that there those times where
the person can by a refurbed unit at a very low cost.
    I remember $29.99 Pearls and $49.99 Curves from AT&T.

Not a bad price at all for a solid and proven unit.

Of course, I have and can't imagine not having data, but
    that is my needs.

A status symbol? The data keeps you connected with so much. I would not even want my Berry with no data...

Both my parents have curves. The love the big screen and the full qwerty keyboard. They also take pics and receive many from myself. Neither one of them wanted anything to do with texting with their old flip phones. Think it had to do with pushing the numbers 2 or 3 times for one letter. Isnt that why we all like our full keyboards? I sat down with each of them and have showen them many of the features including password keeper, the task & memo pad. I also put a 1 gb sd card in both and now they listen to music. They do not have a data plan and it is certainly not a status for them. It's a great phone that they both enjoy using.

I do have a data plan, but use more of the Non-data functions on the phone, than data functions.
I use lots of apps on my phone, instead of having to carry books, or another PDA type device. I love the keyboard for texting instead of T9 or phone key typing. Camera is great. Games for kids while waiting in doctors offices or at restauraunts. I do like getting my email, but could live without it as i am never more than a few feet from a high speed connected computer (work, or 3 laptops at home). GPS i have in my car, but if needed can use the phone. I like to have the BT sync with Addy book with my car.
So i see alot of uses besides the data.

I know someone that doesn't have data on their BB. They said that they use it because of the their massive contacts and other things that they sync to their BB, it's a great device whether you have data or not.

Just moved over to ATT, no data plan. Why bother? I don't need instant email for work or pleasure. I don't want to be bothered every single minute of the day by a cialis ad. I use my BB as a smart phone, not an email machine or laptop. And I'm pretty happy with it. There are going to be some really nice smart phones coming out in the next year from other companies I'd be interested in.

Don't be quick to judge other people. Do what you want to do, but don't expect others to do the same. I've never been one to follow the crowd unless it suited me and my own purposes.

I purchased an 8110 without a data plan. I use it as a Phone and PDA and sync with Outlook. I don't need data because if I am out and about I am out and about doing things. I don't go out to surf the web on my phone, I can do that at home on a real computer. If I had a job that required internet and email while I am on the road then I would purchase a data card for my laptop.

When people boast that they are surfing CrackBerry using their phone or process 200+ emails on their phone, I just think, why would you want to do that? Why don't wait until you get home or you just have a laptop with a data card?

I casually surf the web on my bb quite often. There are many times its just easier to do on the bb than a laptop, such as:
    In bed
Making a dooty ( I never boast about this)
At work (I don't work in an office)
When I'm bored and not home
On the front porch/ back deck in the morning when I'm having my coffee

We have five lines on our family plan - all of us have BlackBerry's, but only three of us have data plans.
My mother doesn't because of the added expense and my son doesn't because I don't want him having un-monitored access to the web.
For both of them, the quality of the device, the PDA functions and the ease of use were the deciding factors in choosing BlackBerry's.

I've heard people say they get BB's for the status. If that is what makes them happy, so be it.

I actually use my BB for the purpose it was made for. And have been a loyal BB fan for years.
