    That's the sensor that senses your skin so it shuts off screen when u put the phone by your ear.

    Proximity sensor. Shuts screen off whe. It senses you placing it next to face. On My z30 I broke the screen and the sensor wouldn't shut off. Was bright red and got really hot. Like burn you hot. And killed battery pretty quick. And wouldn't turn screen off for me.... So pretty important little sensor lol
