    Ok time to embarrass myself...

    Dell Inspiron 1501
    Windows XP and Ubuntu
    1.8GHz Turion X2 < I took out the original 1.7GHz Sempron
    2GB RAM < originally 1GB
    120GB HDD < originally 80GB

    Wow what a powerhouse!

I think I got it in '06. Still use it occasionally, Its pretty quick for its age. But it's bulky and my playbook has slowly taken its place. I don't need a new laptop anyway.

I currently have an Acer Aspire V5-531 (host: Ubuntu Linux 12.04 LTS, guest: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Microsoft Windows XP Home) which I use primarily as an energy-efficient desktop replacement and remotely connect to various virtualised servers under my control. In the role of notebook/laptop my BlackBerry PlayBook (BlackBerry tablet OS 2.1.0.1088) has taken on most of those tasks in conjunction with my BlackBerry Bold (9700:BlackBerry OS 5; too lazy to migrate back to 9780:BlackBerry OS 6 after it was sent for warranty repair during the early summer 2012) connected via BlackBerry Bridge. To be honest, if I could work in a *nix-only world the BlackBerry PlayBook would be the ideal twenty-first century notebook computer.

No laptop here. Mobile stuff is all done on my PlayBook or iPad 3.

I built a Core 2 Duo E6600 based PC about 5 years ago which I'm still using. It still runs well other than having to replace the video card about a year and a half ago. I've put Windows 8 on it, which it runs like a champ.

I've always wondered since BB users are people who get things done, so I figured most BB users would own Thinkpads like me

List what you have, specs would be good to know to, since we're all tech geeks here

    Personally,

    IBM Thinkpad T60
    - 80GB HD
    - CoreDuo 2.0GHz
    - 2GB RAM
    - 4:3 screen anti glare
    - Windows 7 Ultimate
    - 6 cell battery

    Lenovo Thinkpad X220
    - i5 3120 3.GHz
    - 8GB RAM 1333mhz
    - 120GB Kingston HyperX SSD (~350MBps read/write in real world use)
    - 1368x768 IPS anti glare screen (can't stand glossy/vibrant displays)
    - Windows 7 Ultimate
    - Fingerprint reader
    - 9cell battery

Oh and I must add that using the red dot TrackPoint in the middle of the keyboard is just as much an addiction as a BlackBerry itself.

And if we're talking keyboards... ThinkPad keyboards are to laptops what the Bold 9900 is to cell phones...

    T-60 Centrino Duo 1.83 Ghz 2GB RAM.
60 gig w/XP being replaced by 500 with Win 7.
    9-cell extended battery.

Love the T-60, built like a tank, and you're dead-on about the keyboard. Smooth as silk.

I gave my laptop (HP barely running W7) to my daughter a month after I got my PlayBook. I thought I'll buy another one ... I didn't.

I have an Acer D150 netbook that occasionally gets fired up and used, running W7 premium. Since I got the SGT tablet and the Playbook, I rarely fire up the netbook. There are some times I wish I had a bigger screen, but not enough times to make a purchase.

Another Thinkpad addict. T500 Win 7 primary. When not on the road, I link it to my old T60 Win XP using mouse without borders. Each has an external monitor effectively giving me 4 screens. Going to get a T530 soon. T60 will filter down to the kids. Wife has a T420.

That monitor looks like a boulder although I spent many years with similar-sized beasts on my desk. The only old technology (hardware) I miss is the dial-up MODEM. Something is missing without the screech and squeal of the telephone line. And posting "$%$^%&$CARRIER LOST" is lost on the young. Ha! Ha!

For extra points, disassemble the computer system unit and place the components on the flat surface above the keyboard. If the flat surface is metal make sure you cover it with an insulator-type material to prevent short-circuiting the system board.

Ditto for me on the ThinkPad. My primary device is an X201. And I second you on the TrackPoint. It's disconcerting that so few laptops offer that type of control as it pretty much limits your choices to a few model series.

Better not, i bet those plastic latches on the fan/heat sink are so brittle that they'd snap right off

My laptop is a 13" Macbook pro, but I've got a couple of old relics around here that are still in working condition.
My wife occasionally uses an Inspiron 1501 similar to the one mentioned earlier, and I've even got an old Compaq R3000 series hooked up to the tv for the sole purpose of playing old video games

Daily driver: Lenovo Ideapad P580 (I5-3210m, 6gb ram, 750gb hdd) running Ubuntu 12.04

The ex: Toshiba Satellite (model # long worn off) (Athlon 64 X2 TK-57, upgraded to 4gb ram, Radeon X1200, upgraded to 500gb hdd) running Ubuntu 12.04
(this thing is a friggin hot plate after running for only a few minutes, thanks to AMD dropping driver support after I had it for a year)

After reading through the thread, I'm happy to see that Ubuntu has remarkably high representation here. A word of advice to those thinking of trying it out; stay away from 12.10, it's pretty much a beta and you may not have a very fun time (hence no LTS). Is everyone using Unity desktop? I've tried Gnome shell, KDE 4 and Cinnamon, all of which are good DE's but I just keep coming back to Unity. After using Linux of different flavours for about a decade now, and seeing what QNX can do just on the Playbook, I have absolutely no use for Windows.
