I went to Best Buy to pre order a BB10 phone and this is what the salesperson told me, "we are not sure when we will be selling them, but the launch is January's 30th and the street date is the 31st.". So how would much would you read into that?

    Well, it's obvious, isn't it?

The launch announcement is on January 30.

On the 31st, we'll all be dancing in the streets.

    Like, duh... ;-)

31st? I'll be out there the minute Mr. Heins says "You can get a Z10 at AT&T starting (insert date)"

But I think the street date is the date they can officially sell the devices per RIM's request. I don't know if that means that Best Buy will have it that day, but others should (maybe?). I'm guessing here.

    Keep their heads PINGIN'

OP, I doubt that date has a significance (at least at Best Buy.) MAYBE 31st is when the first carrier(s) will have it, but Best Buy most likely won't get it before the carriers do.

As I've said before, especially coming from Best Buy. The street dates can and will change. The screen shot that first showed the Bell BB10 at Best Buy has changed. I work at Future Shop, which is owned and same the same system as Best Buy, so when we say the street date is which ever date that means that's what is put in our RSS system.

My 2 cents, the street date will be between Feb 1st and Feb 8th.

Yeah, after reading the title I figured a couple of smart a$$ remarks would be coming my way.

Anyhow jmurph, so why advertise pre-orders on the respective websites if are the counter salespeople are going to discourage them in-store? I know they are run by the same system, I just happened to have a Best Buy gift card.

The guy who's been tweeting as if he has BB inside information said the USA Carriers will start taking orders after the 30th. What's implied there is after the 30th, the carriers can officially state the price. In the USA they haven't ever done "reservation" but "pre-order" where you actually commit to buy the phone, they do all the time.

My guess is that is the day BB is allowed by the USA carriers to sell the phone.

I would say to that there might be a lack of knowledge from the sales people there. I know at Future Shop the Cellphone sale associates have been invited to a Road Show showing off the phones on the 28th, everything up until then for training has been nothing. With that said the sales person might also have misinterpreted what the Jan 30th Launch Event is, which could be how its been advertised by RIM or how that sales associate understood it. I would also potentially mention that it might have been discouraged at the store because of the sigma that still surrounds BB. I've talked to sales associates at my store that are still on the fence about BB, which is understandable, but I would hope they do not deter customers away from a sale.

It is launching on the 30th. On the 31st it will be available to be sold by any carrier that has completed their testing and wants to start selling it. I'm tired of hearing people say stuff like "RIM better not screw this up" because it's not up to them. They've done all they could, now it's in the carriers hands.

the difference in terms denotes class level... "street date" does not bring to mind escorts You do not know what this insensitve clod can afford, nor did I ask, so beyond the first 4 words of your post, you are showing that you, sir, have the class deserved of my original term.

I'm just curious about all these pre order offer available by these carriers and retailers. I assume they did the same for IPhone and Samsung as well. What was the waiting period for those phones from launching to actual devices being available to the consumers?

The announcement is Jan 30, as we all know.

I heard that the "release date" is Jan 31, but that's not when they'll actually ship.

The ship date is Feb 1, but that's not when they'll actually arrive.

The arrival date is Feb 2, but then the stores still have to unpack them and stock the shelves.

The shelf date is Feb 3.

That's a Sunday, so you won't actually be able to buy them then. Plus you won't know which stores actually got them anyway.

The street date is when you walk down the street and finally find a store that's got them in stock and is willing to sell you one.

I have no idea when that will be.
