Ok, so I have a 8830 through Alltel. Currently the battery port is hosed and basically i can't really charge my phone. Moral of the story is that i need (and want for that matter) a new phone. I don't care about paying full price or getting one off Ebay or what not.
My question is can a curve 8900 be unlocked and used for Alltel. The lady said that it has to be "CDMA"...and truthfully, i have no idea what that means. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
No. The 8900 is a gsm phone. Your 8830 is a cdma device. You might look for an 8330 curve. I know its not the newest device but it is still a great phone.

Gsm vs cdma means one technology vs another
Att/rogers/tmobile/fido are gsm/simcard/EDGE/GPRS/HSDPA
Verizon/alltel/bell/telus/sprint are cdma/evdo/1x
All of rims bbs (post8***)that are gsm are labeled
8*10, 8*20, 8*00, 9*10, 9*20, 9*00,
Those labeled ending in 10 inclide gps, 20 is wifi
All of rims bbs (post 8***)that are cdma will be labeled
8*30,9*30
Most cdmas have gps instead of wifi
Fyi
Cdma has
8230,8130,8330,8830,9530
Soon
9630
Gsm
8220,8110,8120,8310,8320,8800,8820,8900,9000
Soon
9900,9520,8200,9300
I'd wait for the 9630 bold on alltel..
And I'd wait for the 8200pearlflip3g or 9300 3g curvee2 on gsm

The new curve is coming to cdma carriers like alltel soon so if you can wait this will be a great bb. Buy a charging cardle to solve the charing issue.
