well surely someone has. Can I reflash/reprogram to the alltel firmware for the 8330, and use VZW network settings and then use the GPS?

    Yes, it is so dead.

Unless something changes, you won't be able to use GPS on Verizon other than with VZNav or BB Maps.

You can't use another carrier's OS either, as the lock down is in Verizon's service books, which you cannot change with a software upgrade.

in advanced options> applications, highlight BB Maps or VZnav hit the menu button and select edit permissions. set all to allow. The only device that is unlocked for 3rd party at this time is the storm. above instructions are for those softwares only

The BBmaps nav works great on mine & I have Verizon. I did notice on my wife's Pearl that the nav didn't work until I did the 4.5 update. After that it worked great. I never checked on my Curve before I did the update to 4.5. But, does work on Verizon. Did you download the update from Verizon or RIM? I've heard that there are some software differences between the two. I first downloaded the update from RIM. After that I was having problems with BBmessenger, so I called Verizon and they mentioned that I should have downloaded it through their site. Anywho, we were able to fix the problem & everything's working great. But, I did download the update for my wife's Pearl from Verizon & her BBmap nav works.

Download google maps and it'll work just fine. I have the BB curve 8330 and have used google maps as a gps, it works great. GPS location set to on and away you go. Google maps is free.

Google Maps is not using GPS.

ONLY BB Maps and VZ NAV work using GPS on the 8330.

To answer the OP: No. no other app can be used that uses GPS at this time. i've tried several.
