Will a Bold 9700/9780 on Rogers work on Bell's or Virgin Mobile's new HSPA network? I unlocked a 9700 and it doesnt seem to be working. It's unlocked from Rogers. The apn settings i used were pda.bell.ca and I tried inet.bell.ca
I tried it with a Fido sim card. It worked.
I currently have the torch on virgin. There is no "just 2g" on the network, only 3G if i put 2g only the phone goes into SOS so i thought this was related to why the bold wouldnt work. Since the bold is trying to use 2g which doesnt work. How can i get 3G to work so the phone will get out out of SOS mode? I am going tomorrow to buy a 9780, i dont want to waste my money if it wont work. Please anyone help.
it looks like Bell's network is 850/1900 so i would assume a 9700 from Rogers would work with no issue. if im not mistaken, they only offer 3G and no EDGE. it looks like Bell acquired Virgin, so i would only assume it would run on their network also.
you need to make sure the network settings are set on 3G & 2G, not on 2G only.
It is set on 3G&2G and it won't work still (sos) but when I but in a fido (gsm) sim card it worked flawlessly. It should work with virgin I don't see why not. Tomorrow I'm driving an hour to switch a torch with a 9780 I need to know that the 9780 will work.

the rogers 9780 will be the same as a rogers 9700. they use the same radio frequencies.
So its supposed to work... And it doesn't. Well maybe its just the phone? I'm guessing its the network. Do I call virgin and maybe they can do something to get network coverage on it? I don't get why its not working.

if i did, i wouldve answered you by now. make sure the mobile network is turned on. if its just saying SOS, usually thats when the mobile network is turned off but the radio is on.
I removed and reinserted a couple virgin mobile sim cards no cigar. It says its trying to connect to the 2G network when there is none. So therefore it goes into sos.

Any resolutions to this? I am experiencing the same thing, Rogers Blackberry Bold 9780 it seams unlocked in the sense that it will work with both Rogers and Fido, but not Virgin sim cards. When I go through options>device>advanced system settings> Sim Card and punch in MEPD everything is disabled, like it should be as an unlocked phone. When I put in a Virgin sim card goes to SOS when in the 2G & 3G mobile setting, but when I change it to just 3G it searches for a network endlessly. I thought an unlocked GSM blackberry would work on Virgins HSPA network
APN setting should update automatically once you register the device and BIS is active.
"Should" being the key word here. Does the device have to be registered in order to use it? If it's unlocked, and one already had an active BIS data plan, you should just need to insert a SIM card, change the APN's, and have it working.
With my Android, unlocked, whenever I use a different SIM all's I do is change my APN's to the corresponding network and it works fine.
