I would like to know if you can turn off certain email inboxes at certain times of the day.

The situation is that I have my own blackberry and could use it for work email but at 5pm I want to switch off receiving email until the next morning.

Anyone know if this can be done or if I need a 3rd party programme.

I don't think there is a way to do it, and I'm unsure if there are any 3rd party apps. Your best bet would be to create a custom profile with no alerts/no flashing LED for emails. When you leave work, just change the profile from normal to your custom 5pm profile. This way you will only be bothered by phone calls until you switch it back to normal the next morning.

I've never tried it, but you can try to enable the BlackBerry Firewall and select what messages you would like to block.
