If you don't own an Apple TV then you really don't know what the differences are here.

You can obviously stream movies, but it goes well beyond that. You can also use airplay to stream the movie while still continuing to do whatever you want to do on your phone. You can also mirror your device onto the TV screen.

It really works beautifully and there is nothing to it. Yes it's more for entertainment purposes, but so is roku, a Blu-ray player, an x box or play station, or any other entertainment device you might own.

It comes down to preference and what people do with their devices.

It is easy to poke on things the BlackBerry can't do, but there are some cool features that I was able to show off this holiday which the iPhone can't do.

1) HDMI out to TV: During the holidays, I was able to show my children's Christmas Concert video directly from my Z10 on a nice HDTV. My wife's video on the iPhone is still stuck there (she got it from another angle). I was also able to show Home Alone 2 (thanks BlackBerry!) directly from my phone.

2) Blinking red light: You look so important when family notice the red blinking light on your phone and tells you that there is something important for you. The iPhone just sits alone with little action.

3) BlackBerry's "25 days of Christmas" promo: My Z10 is loaded with games which my kids get to enjoy. Bad Piggy is their latest fav.

4) BBM Beta: Been showing off the PTT (voice memo) and GPS features coming soon on BBM.

5) BlackBerry uniqueness: Oh, you got a BlackBerry... cool, what can it do? Isn't it going bankrupted? Hey, your phone is red! I just have an iPhone 5 like millions of other people. Hey, its a conversation starter.

So overall, well done BlackBerry for the holidays. Can't wait for what's coming up next year.

1 - Good thing you had that convenient HDMI adapter cable with you. Too bad the wife didn't have the equivalent one for her iPhone handy.

2 - Notifications on iOS as well. Not to mention, who would think someone is important because they're phone is flashing? IMO, my phone is the last thing I should be looking at when I'm around family and friends, unless I'm taking a picture.

3 - More of every type of app at every price point on iOS.

4 - Voxer for PTT and Facetime with all the family and friends with iOS worldwide. Uniqueness is not an advantage when it limits the communication you can do with a device whos primary purpose is communication.

5 - See above, more users on iOS makes the features it has that work among its users much farther reaching. That new iPhone someone in the fam just got is also a conversation starter, along with the accessories they got for it, etc.

Those that finally wake up from the fact that iphones are the most useless and outdated smartphones on the market. Most are getting SG's. In the end regardless of what smartphone you choose it will be head and shoulders above the outdated iPhone.

Firstly, what I have is a HDMI to micro-HDMI adapter:

Very portable, cheap and basically, I just borrow a HDMI cable from the TV to plug it to the adapter and voila. Don't need to lug an AppleTV around. If I know I am going to be showing something to people, I will just bring my adapter.

Secondly, I know what the iPhone does for notification. I used to use one and my wife is using one. It flashes its "flash" light briefly. Actually, it is annoying if you are watching TV and all of a sudden, "flash". The BlackBerry's blinking red LED is a WAY more elegant solution.

Thirdly, the BlackBerry promo is 25 days! Apple is having a 12 days of gifts. BlackBerry is giving away more that's all.

Fourthly, BBM is BlackBerry's native app. I am not talking about other third party software which has particular features. I am talking about the main one the manufacturer support (Apple = Message, Samsung = ChatON, etc.)

Finally, BlackBerry in North America is becoming a smartphone that is shunned. There is a mystique about it at least when you talk to anyone on the street what it is. So having one just allows you to have some pretty interesting conversations. Really, when was the last time someone went and say, "Is that an iPhone?".

To be fair about Apples giveaway, each day on the 12 days offers like 5 apps for free, so it is more than blackberry. But if people were complaining about the blackberry giveaway, you should see Apples, it's horrible!

iOS users don't need to "lug an Apple TV around" either. There are adapters for iOS devices similar to the one you describe. Coincidentally, your original post omitted any mention of an adapter being necessary.

I agree it's a gimmick for me too, cause I live on a relatively small island and never need (or can't because most don't work with exception of Google Maps) to share my location with others via a map, let alone have it self-destruct. But it can be useful for others that live in big cities and are really all really deep about security and stuff

Does it matter? No. Some people I know who had phones with HDMI ports never, ever used them.

It's simply a better experience to use something like an AppleTV or AllShare Cast Hub than to use a clunky HDMI cable. Wireless is the future.

Something else that the iPhone doesn't have.
.....though I'm sure someone will point out that you can buy an expensive Miracast dongle for the iPhone.

You can already share your location on BBM and there's no need yo self destruct because it's of single use.

I really can't think in what situation I would need that.

USB Host Mode (Z30 only)

Christmas day my mother got one of those slideshow picture frames. Of course we wanted to put pictures on it while there. My sister with the iPhone, who is in IT and knows what she is doing--in spite of having an iPhone--stood there, frame and SD card in hand with no idea what to do. I pulled my Z30 out of my pocket, pulled the mini-USB to USB adapter I normally have with me, pulled an SD Card to USB adapter I have in my camera bag, pulled the SD Card from her camera, copied the days pictures to my Z30 using USB Host Mode, put the SD Card for the picture frame in to the adapter, copied all her pictures and a bunch I had on my Z30 to the card, stuck it in the frame and watched it run a slideshow of the Christmas day photos (some taken minutes earlier) and pictures from other events.

Her iPhone could not do that. First it doesn't have a standard mini-USB port. Second it doesn't have USB host mode. Third, it doesn't have a File Manager analog.

By the way, I also used NFC to copy the pictures my lady took with her Z10 to my Z30 and included those on the picture frame.

Also included were the photos I took with my Canon which are always available on my Z30 a few minutes after taken using Eye-Fi and Remote File Access. This is something the iPhone could do as there is an Eye-Fi app. But it couldn't put the files on the SD card without a computer.

Too much tech, my head is getting sore. Earlier this year I started shooting film photography and it was a revelation. If I want to share photos now I actually share prints and I don't have to worry about backups because the film is already the backup and proven to archive for 100+ years.

You don't need a dongle on your BB10 phone as it's built in. Your TV may need one if it doesn't have Miracast though...

Wait I'm pretty sure your hdmi cable has to be a mini to work with BlackBerry not a micro.

The only thing really worth noting are #2 and #1, the native mini-HDMI out. But even then, it's still another cable one has to buy (a micro version at that), which is the same as someone with an iPhone buying an Apple cable...

#4 BBM Beta PTT... why would you list something beta? Anyway, iPhone users have the same functionality for free. They can just download Viber or similar app. And before you give me the whole, "Yeah, but it's not baked into the OS! It's an app!" let me remind you that the feature you speak of had to be downloaded and installed onto your phone (just like an app would). And before you come back with, "Yeah, but once it passes Beta, it'll be a native feature to the OS," I'll just point to the millions upon millions of iOS users who don't give a damn whether or not it's baked into the OS; if the phone can do it and it works, then it makes no difference. If that is the only defense against the so-called app gap, then I guess EVERY app needs to be baked into the OS. It seems when a competitor can offer something BBRY can not, fan boys will immediately refute with, "B-b-bu-but... it's an app, not native in the OS..."

Why, in this modern age of smartphones, does anybody need a blinking red light to tell them what their important messages are? That's a relic of an age before notifications were commonplace. Either your family is humoring you or they aren't aware of this very basic feature, but either way this is something I would never, ever post as a positive.

What might be a gimmick for you, might be a valuable addition for others.
I really like the idea of sharing your location for a certain amount of time while driving/walking somewhere I am going to met people.
E.g when I pick up friends I don't need to call and text until everyone knows when I am going to arrive.
