I am really thinking of switching to a blackberry. I don't want to do a contract with a cell phone company though. I am in the southeastern US and it's my understanding that I could get a blackberry classic at Target or Best Buy without a sim. The one I saw online from Target says that it is factory unlocked without a sim. when I called straight talk they stated that most phones without a sim from Verizon or sprint can work but they would have to check the phones compatibility with them. I don't want to buy this phone and then find out that I can't get any prepaid plan with it. Any suggestions?

Don't know of any Prepaid Providers that offer BlackBerry.

But there are a number of folks that have bought an unlocked phone and are using it on one of those networks. You just need to decide on what provider you want to use, find out what Carrier that are using and buy a phone that matches those frequencies.

    People still do contracts?

    Seems Draconian to me.

Break free and live by your own terms. Prepaid is the way to go.

Sadly Canada is about as draconian as it gets when it comes to cell phone contracts and companies

It shouldn't! Matter if it's a blackberry or any other unlocked GSM device.
If it's a blackberry os10 you do not need any special service because of it being a blackberry.

Several of the MVNOs the OP mentioned ride on Verizon's network, which is not GSM, but CDMA. Thus, an unlocked GSM phone will not work on it. Only specific phones will work on CDMA networks.

In the US, Verizon, Sprint, and regional carrier US Cellular all use CDMA, and have many MVNOs on their networks. AT&T and T-Mobile, and regional carrier MetroPCS (now owned by T-Mobile) are GSM, but don't always use the same GSM or LTE bands as phones in the rest of the world, with AT&T being most compatible with "International" GSM/LTE phones.
