I really don't know what the company can do at this point. they repeatedly make important decisions years too late.
I'm surprised the market was so rough on BlackBerry this time. Yes, they missed the revenue expectation, but they made a profit. Wondering if they hit the revenue expectation and had a loss if the market would have been happier.
Now, I'm assuming the market is also reacting to some of the things that were said (or not said) by John Chen. I haven't had a chance to digest those details, so perhaps someone can chime in on what transpired.
The main profit from what I can see is a one time payment from the Qualcomm settlement. The numbers aren't really great, but way better than when they had all the hardware finacial liabilities. Now the street punishes them for a bad quarter, but no one is worried about bankruptcy.
The market will forgive a loss today if signs are pointing to profits tomorrow. The reason the market was so hard on BB is because not only did they lose money (if you take away the Qualcomm settlement, they lost about $300M this quarter), but their growth drivers significantly declined, which means the future looks a lot less bright than people thought it would at this stage of the game.
The Qualcomm money was a one-time boost, and while that's great, the market wants ONGOING profits and steady growth. That's what would really get rewarded.
The BlackBerry "market" doesn't concern me at all. I'm not invested except in my BlackBerryalcoholism. It's the only smartphone I've ever own (since '08). As long as they exist and bring me branded devices, I'm cool. But even if the gavel falls and they cease to exist, I'll have great memories and a new smartphone life to deal with. But again, that's just me.
So the Qualcomm settlement did impact their financial statement? I got raked over the coals asking about this in the comments below the article and then told it was not important.

I guess it's for all those overpayments to Qualcomm for bb10 drivers and ICs. I can't help but notice that 0.9B USD is almost as much as was written down for unsold z10s. That write down changed everything for BlackBerry and paved the way for Chen to take the helm and kill hardware.

Big impact on the quarter's revenue. Next one may be quite bad since no such adjustment (so far) for declining and quite poor sales in hardware and no significant uptick in software. BBRY IMO isn't being punished so much as it is being corrected for the unwarranted runup to earnings.
Shorters are focusing on Revenue instead of Profit. As the company goes forward in all software revenue can go down but making same and more profit from previous model. As costs for all software go down and margins are higher.

The price of the shares before the quarterly accounts were released was based on analysts expectations...
... the quarterly accounts showed that the analysts had been over-optimistic in their expectations.
Therefore the share price was adjusted to fit reality instead of the analysts previous expectations (which have turned out to be over-optimistically wrong).
If the quarterly accounts had reflected what the analysts had been expecting then there would have been no great change in the share price (eg just the usual minor daily variations).
Of course, if next quarter, BlackBerry exceed the analysts' expectations, then there will be an immediate rise in the share price.
not only the street didn't like the earning report. I, share holder didn't like it either. the share buyback scheme just channel more money to the CEO and debt holder pocket... the software for car entertainment system look less likely as recurring income such as subscription fee. Radar although is interesting, but how many truck uses radar? Autonomous driving car is promising, but Tesla went to GAN AI instead (canned ex-Apple Chris after 6 month), BB sold 400 heads to Ford, does not look like beef up in that area... Sold the building, get rid of hardware, get rid of BIS server, moved to cloud, spend some qualcomm money, anything else can bring in some dough?
The Qualcomm settlement was a nice cash bonus for BlackBerry, but as it is only a one-off, it is not indicative of future earnings per share.
The market already knew about the Qualcomm settlement, so this was already calculated into the pre-earnings-report share price (eg reflecting what analysts 'expected' BlackBerry's accounts would be, as opposed to the less rosy actual accounts that were published).
The share price went down because excluding the one-off Qualcomm settlement, Blackberry still made a loss, whereas the market's expectations had been that Blackberry would approximately break even.
On a positive note, BlackBerry's loss (eg excluding the one-off Qualcomm settlement), in the last quarter was significantly less than in previous comparable quarters.
Hope that makes some sense.

"The results included a previously disclosed $940 million arbitration payment from U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O)."
With that one-time payment included, yes. But quarterly revenues were only $100M. Without the one-time payment, they had a net loss of around $300M.They did turn a profit.
Fire the CEO and hire someone with the vision and temperament for the job.
Chen's doing pretty well given the disaster he inherited - but, the next year will reveal whether BB's current business model is sustainable or not. Chen is now playing more to BB's strengths, but there is still some serious competition in those markets, and BB has a history and culture of poor execution (thanks largely to Mike), and Chen is going to have to make sure that all of that has been swept away. I don't think any of us here are in a position to know if that's been done or not - only time will tell.
What is indisputable is that BB had no future in the smartphone business regardless. At least with the licensing model, they have minimal risk and the potential for at least a small profit. That's more than they've been able to say for the last 5 or 6 years.
