From within a message, pull that message to the right a little (about a centimetre or half an inch), keep hold of it and move the message up or down a little. (You will be able to see the other messages to the left of the current message.) When you move the current message up and down, you move to the message above or below. Let go of the current message to allow the one above or below to open.

The 2 gestures are essentially L shapes in different orientations.
Bare in mind you need to try do this in one movement.
From within the message slide your finger from left to right and then down

That's the shape you are trying to make

The other is literally a backwards L
So slide left to right and then up

    Hope this helps

Nooooooo. Not that one. Or is it? But this is how it was written on the main page.

    "10.1

    July 2013

The OS 10.1 release was the first major OS update for BlackBerry 10. Here users got added features that included message gestures in the Hub, simple password support, email sync settings and much more.

Next/previous message navigation shortcut: use a simple gesture to quickly move to the last or next message without having to return to the full message list. Within any message in the BlackBerry Hub:
Swipe to the right and then down (like an upside-down L) to move forward to the next message
Swipe to the right and then up (like a backwards L) to move back to the previous message"

Oooooohhhh. *facepalm* I get it now. The article is still talking about the L shaped gesture. I thought the description in the first paragraph was different from the one in the 2nd and 3rd. I didn't see the ":" sign.
    Thank you folks. Bless you

    Seriously?
Wow that's pretty sucky since it was part of the update.
I wonder what reason it wouldn't have been included for you guys seems strange

Not strange to those of us on Verizon still waiting for the 10.1MR. Anyone who is a Chicago Cubs fan is well used to the expression "wait until next year ". Same goes for Verizon customers.

Don't think of the whole gesture. Think of what the gesture is made of. What it is doing. The side swipe is simply to "peek" under the current opened message. Then the up or down swipe is to move the selector cursor that is underneath up or down one message. Once the cursor moves -- that "underneath" message gets opened and replaces the one you had opened.

You can do this gesture very very slowly to practice.
