You cannot block SMS messages from a particular number. You can only block all SMS messages. Options>Security>Firewall
Verizon will allow you to block SMS from up to 5 different numbers for free.
Log in to your My Verizon account from a computer and click on My Services and then click on Verizon Safeguards then click on Spam Controls. You can enter the numbers there.

Yes, it's a service feature rather than a device feature.
You can block the 5 certain numbers from MyVerizon.
