    Please correct if I'm wrong
There are three types of memory in BB devices:

    -RAM (Runtime memory)
    -ROM(built-in flash memory)
    -external(microsd card)

RAM - used when device is turned-on for the kernel and for currently running programs
ROM - used for installation of apps and for system data (sms, email, call log)
external - used for handling mp3,photos,docs... etc

    RAM - Random Access Memory
    ROM - Read Only Memory
    SD - Secure Digital

Flash - electrically erasable programmable read-only memory

The terms RAM and ROM date back to the early days of computers and are not used by BlackBerry.

BlackBerry internal memory is Flash. It combines the properties of RAM and ROM memory. It is can be accessed and changed like RAM, but it keeps it content without a continuous source of power like ROM.

The SD card also contains Flash memory.

BlackBerry - BlackBerry Bold Smartphone Product Detail

    Memory
    512 MB onboard memory
    2 GB media card included
Expandable memory with support for microSD cards
    ...
These are the BlackBerry Bold 9780 Specs directly from Research in Motion.

There is 512 Mb of memory that will be used for device OS software, BlackBerry applications, third party applications and data.

The Media Card (microSD) is used to store data files only. Data includes music, video, pictures and downloaded documents. In many ways, it behaves much like a removable hard disk drive in a conventional PC computer.

    9000
    128 MB onboard memory
    1 GB internal memory media
Expandable memory with support for microSD cards
    ...
The Bold 9000 combined onboard and internal memory.

There is 128 Mb available for normal use, plus "about" 1 Gb of memory that is used like the Media Card, but is not removable.
That would be an advantage where a high degree of security is required. It can be remotely managed and deleted just like the content of internal memory.
