YouTube's website is no longer compatible with legacy BlackBerry devices (including the Bold you're considering), and will likely never be compatible again.

Whether or not you use YouTube, the fact that such a mainstream service no longer works on pre-BB10 BlackBerry's highlights the fact that legacy BlackBerry OS is (for all intents and purposes) EOL (end of line).

The majority of contemporary websites load very slowly on legacy devices and, when they do finally load, often don't render or work properly.

Unless you only ever plan on using your phone for calls and email, then I'd very strongly suggest that you avoid getting a legacy device today.

    Just my 2 cents

Go for a Q10, there's no reason for anything older. If you can manage yourself a Classic, go for it. I was hesitant about using the Q10 in 2015, but it does what I need it to do.
Someone once told me how amazing it was that this phone had a fully functional touch screen.

Thanks, the Q10 wasn't the first BlackBerry with a touch screen.

The 9700 is running OS5 - It was one of my favorite devices, on the other hand the 9780 runs OS6.

Blackberry 10 is a completely different operating system from OS5 and OS6.

And both the 9700 and 9780 are running operating systems that have a limited support structure for HTML5 and newer web technology, not to mention newer cypher suites. BBOS is a 2G era operating system: as fast as mobile technology has moved, that would be like trying to use NT and Internet Explorer 4 in the modern world.

I had a 9700 and it was a great device for its time, but given the opportunity to make an upgrade to the Q10 I'd take it in a heartbeat because I have the ability to do more with the device. Even if it does more than my workflow requires, I'd rather have the ability to adapt when my workflow changes.

The 9700 was one of the first devices to get OS6 IIRC. It didn't have the memory to process it properly. I remember the days where you had to shrink the OS by deleting almost everything on it to make it run. That left you with probably 5-10 apps from BB App world tops that you had space to install. If you didn't pre-shrink the OS, well, welcome to 20 minute spinning clocks ever hour. This possibly taught RIM to not greenlight BB10 on the Playbook

The 9700 was one of the best BlackBerries ever for its time, a true corporate workhorse in a compact and attractive consumer-friendly package. Until the iPhone 4 came out, the vast majority of friends and colleagues I knew at the time strongly preferred the 9700 over the 3GS for its far superior email and organization capabilities combined with its ability to run some level of general consumer apps, and put their money where their mouths were - people that today swear by anything iOS.

I felt like I just wrote a mini-obituary for what was probably RIM's last "great" phone - both technically and in terms of consumer appeal and popular opinion. That was in 2009/2010. In 2015 this phone is woefully inadequate for all but the basic of tasks and is just an inch above any old regular feature phone that your grandma uses. Do yourself a favor and get the Q10 over it, it is leaps and bounds more modern and capable than the 9700 or any legacy device.

Q10 or passport all the way, they are a light year or two further ahead than the 9700
