I've heard that 131 is the best one for battery life. Personally, I use 138 for more responsiveness. It does go through the battery if I browse all day, but that's why I bought a car charger.
You'd probably get better response to your question in the Curve forums...
I agree that currently, 4.5.0.131 is the best OS for the 8330. You can get faster, more responsive OSs, but it usually comes at the expense of battery performance.

Its all speculation as to if an OS can improve battery life.
There are things you can do to preserve battery life or
simple invest in a bettery with an extended life
Preserve battery:
Lower screen light
Use standby frequently
Turn off radio in no reception area
Limit apps running in background
Turn off wifi/bluetooth when not in use
Battery
Buy a new battery with a longer life
Alternate between 2 batteries.
