Is it possible to send free texts via mobile gchat? I do it on my laptop already via the google lab sms text function. (Upgrading sms message plan is out of the question, I'm sick of already getting ripped off like eveyone in the US for texts- 5 dollars for 200 texts- INCOMING gets charged too). I end up using around 260 but I use my laptop usually to send now so I stay right under 200 (ATT)

What is "mobile gchat"? Are you talking about Google Talk? Google Talk uses data. You cannot send SMS through it.

No, unfortunately you can't. I've tried to see if it'll take my friends' phone numbers for kicks and giggles (I have unlimited texting, but was curious). It won't take 'em, just their google IDs.

Use Google Voice. It uses data but you can send free SMS with it.

Don't forget, you could use the SMS gateways for free (from your end).

Let's say your friend is on Verizon and his/her number is 978-123-4567.

You could send an email to [email protected] and it would be received by your friend as a TXT message. And if they reply in TXT, it will come back to your mail. Not as nice as threaded SMS, but it is free for you......
