Is there an adapter that allows you to read an SD card on your BB without opening the back, pulling battery and replacing your card with the one you want read?

When you buy an SD reader will it only read the card unless it actually says reader/writer?

Not from a BlackBerry, No. The built in port is the only place a card can be read from the device.

As mentioned, with the usb cable, you can read/write to the sd card. You have to enable mass Storage mode and then Windows' Explorer treats it like another hard disk or usb drive. It is slower than removing the card and using a card reader but is more convenient generally.

Buy a Pearl Flip, the SD card is accessible via a port on the side of the phone! :-)
