Are they're certain places you have to post to get youyr count to 10 to be able to receive messages?

Just be sure to make meaningful posts. Otherwise they will be deleted. In particular, posts that say "Here's 1.", "Here's another one.", or "I'm just trying to get to 10." will always be deleted.
You can receive messages, you just can't send them (except to Mods), until you have 10 posts in forums that count.
