Just sitting in my car now with a kindle and an old 7230 beside my 9700 and I can't help wondering how did we go from not needing any back light in sunlight to needing all the back light to see in daylight? Is this progress?

Is that Kindle color? It's a whole lot easier to render black on white with enough contrast to make it readable without back lighting. Color, not so much.

The Kindle is not color but the 7230 is and the stronger the sunlight the better the screen looks without any back light.
