I've been wanting to get into blackberry, I wanted to get a 9930 when my contract is up in august. Someone suggested getting a phone on craigslist, etc instead of waiting till my contract is up. the 9930's are expensive but I can pick up a bold 9650 in mint cond for much less . . .

obviously the 9930 would be a better device, but what I'm asking is: would you consider this a good starting point, or is it better to wait to get a 9930 later?

I have had my 9650 two years and have never regretted going with BB instead of any other phone. My wife has an iPhone and my son a Droid. They are good, but there is so much more about my BB and the security it provides. I want to update now, but will wait for the new BB10 phone being released in the Fall.

Final Word: 9650 is a great phone. Good luck on your choice

The 9650 is a great phone. I used one for two years also and never had a problem. The browser is a little slow since it is an older model. The 9930 is what I use now and I love it also. Much faster. And works great bridged to my playbook. I would not hesitate to buy the 9650 to get use to the blackberry experience. And just when you think " How was I living without a BB" BB10 will show up on the market and blow you away.

Yes the 9650 is a great starting point for a Blackberry.
Of course the 9930 would be a better pick but if you can get a mint 9650 for cheap I would go with that & save your upgrade. ^_^

so the 9650 will not work with the playbook bridge?

the "mint" 9650 is $75 . . does that sound reasonable?

And, yes, the 9650 works fine with the PB Bridge

I had a 9650 and liked it a lot. Opera Mini browser makes up for the slowish native browser.

I would still be using it if the ear speaker hadn't gone bad on me.

Another option you might want to consider is a Curve. That way you could have the latest OS on a better speced device while waiting for BB10.

Price wise, the new Curves will be a little higher but not much.

Wow. $75 is a great deal. Make sure you get the right phone for your carrier.
