ok, so I understand that being in wifi mode will drain my battery life faster. My question is, however, does the battery drain faster simply by having wifi mode turned on, but still in network mode, or does wifi have to actually be enabled for the battery to drain faster?

    I'm on a Storm2 9520 and previously a Bold 9000.
It seems to drain the moment wifi is just turned out, irregardless whether its connected or not. Similarly with Bluetooth.
The moment it connects, battery will drain a bit further then will stabilise after a while.
I turn off both wifi and bluetooth when not in use.

I have not noticed a significant drain from just having Wi-Fi enabled. If you have UMA over Wi-Fi, it can actually conserve battery versus voice/data over a distant cell tower. The biggest drain comes from using EDGE for voice and Wi-Fi for data/BIS. See my sig for a great many battery conservation tips.
